Hard to find, great once you do! - Edit

This place is upstairs (or via antique elevator) 1 floor. The address is 405 Santa Luzia inside an older building doorway. You might find someone dining there that speaks English. The staff I spoke with did not. Arrive early for the lunch to obtain large variety of menu options. Each plate is made individually. Nutritious, not expensive. Antique building, antique dining area, Located in original downtown Rio historical area. Nice find and worth the trip.

Pros: Delicious vegan options, Historical area, great staff, Not expensive

Cons: Hard to find, No one spoke English , Limited hours

downtown macro-oasis - Edit

Very nice place with tasty set dishes as well as take-away (like esfirras and other versions of Brazilian snacks). Friendly ownership and staff. Note that it is on the second floor of a building and a bit hard to spot, but you will see the sign if you look up. Just enter that building and take the narrow staircase on the right.

Mostly vegan except for an occasional fish dish and a few other exceptions.

Finally, they're open on Saturdays.

Pros: tasty macro food, decent prices, central location

Cons: limited hours, somewhat limited selection

its ok generally - Edit

strangely, my companion was being served at the counter , but she was abandoned for 5 minutes by the woman dishing up the food....wait for it..in order for the server to answer the restaurant telephone..it took a lot of questioning to work out whether there was a buffet or not, a la carte, or what.
Food was good but i didnt like the set meal type setup....some of my dish wasnt too tasty...a hair in my companions dessert....good food , macrobiotic...

Pros: vegan, macrobiotic, healthy

Cons: hair in dessert, service poor, confusing upon entering

Upstairs - Edit

Macrobiotic self service club with daily changing menu. Suitable for vegans as well. The food was very tasty (try Banana Cake!). Super small terrace. Nice and friendly cook/waiter/owner and other club's members warm & willing to convert you. No english. Very different to rest of Rio!

Pros: good food, good value, friendly staff

Cons: hidden
