Vegan options in the old city!

The old city of Iloilo City is extremely polluted with hardly any vegan food options (restaurants) in sight. So, this place, next to a horrible main road, nice and clean and cool (air con) inside is a potential haven for vegetarians and vegans. As the previous commenter wrote: "Be extremely clear with staff if eating here". Plant-based options (= no meat) are marked with a leaf. If you ask for vegan, they say "those marked with a leaf". These dishes can be veganized they say. They understand what vegan means, they say. But better repeat and explain it repeatedly. They have no WiFi!

Pros: Friendly staff

Good food but triple check for vegan!

Food was nice but the labelling is confusing as items noted plant based weren't. Got a plant based burrito and after a few bites bit into dairy cheese. Disgusting. The staff apologised and changed the food after some explanation. The burrito was nice though! Be extremely clear with staff if eating here.

Pros: Tasty

Cons: Non vegan ingredients labelled as plant based

Delightful vegan-friendly menu

I came across this place rather accidentally and was surprised that I had not found anything on it when searching for vegan-friendly dining options in Iloilo. The only dining area I saw, the one right after the entrance, was relatively crowded for a weekday lunchtime walk-in, but I was told they had two more dining areas, so one could take the risk without a reservation.

The menu of my visit in mid-January 2023 contained many more vegetarian and vegan/plant-based options than older menu pics I found online. They had dishes that were either vegetarian or plant-based by design or were explicitly announced to be adaptable, even listing the vegan ingredients that would be used as substitutes for non-vegan ingredients.

I opted for the Frida Bowl, which was quite delicious. It was not as much food as I had expected, only about half the size of a savoury bowl one would get in Europe or North America, but still quite filling. I had intended to order guacamole with it, but they had run out of avocadoes. Similarly, they had run out of oat milk that day, so I had my after-lunch flat white with almond milk instead.

The food was good and I would visit again for that. The service quality was less good. The waiter first placed me at a table that was full of dirty plates while and only returned after a while to clean it up, whereas other clean tables would have been unoccupied from the start. Then he was extremely pushy for my order. He gave me the menu and at the same time waited next to me to immediately get my order. I had to send him away three or four times to be able to study the menu fully. In the end, he first brought me the correct receipt, went away with my cash and then returned with a different receipt and much less change than I was supposed to get. I insisted on it being corrected and he then apologized, but make sure to check your receipt both before paying and after getting your change back. On the positive side, he brought filtered water in a glass bottle with the menu.

Two more positive things I noticed: They are happy to pack your leftovers in what looked like cardboard boxes from a distance, and many other customers used that service. That's a great contribution to reduce food waste. And they use grey water to flush the toilets, which were very clean.

Pros: Many vegan & vegetarian options, Leftovers will be packed for you

Cons: Service quality
