Merchant Ale House
98 St. Paul Street (at downtown), St Catharines, Ontario, Canada, ON L2R 3M2
Serves meat, vegan options available. Brewpub that brews craft beer on site and offers other craft beers from outside breweries. Dimly lit with live music sometimes. Has a few vegan choices on the menu, including a vegan shawarma and the white bean dip with pita; plus soups, nachos, and dips can be made vegan upon request. Feb 2013: the portobello burger was replaced by a housemade veggie burger, which could be made vegan by omitting curry mayonaise. Has daiya cheese.

Greatest vegan nachos! - Edit
Amazing vegan nachos and additional toppings like guacamole and corn salsa. They have Daiya (and let's be honest, no Vegan nachos would be complete with it). They have a few other vegan options but for someone who is both Vegan and Gluten Free, the nachos are an absolute MUST try
Pros: Daiya cheese , staff understand what "vegan" means , several menu options for vegans
Cons: can be a bit crowded and loud if you're looking fo,

My Favourite Place - Edit
I find myself at the Merch once or twice a week. They have a vegan shwarma which is great. The fried green tomato sandwich is vegan and is delicious! Last time I got vegan nachos and they were fresh, hot and loaded with toppings. Salad dressing is amazing and of course the beer is a must. Service is fast and friendly and they even have tables in the basement for when it is really busy.
Pros: atmosphere, friendly fast service, many vegan options and Daiya
Cons: none

It's a bar - Edit
The beer is hit or miss. Sometimes it's enjoyable but most of the time not. The kitchen is down in a dungeon. Just have a look at how clean the bathrooms are and you may get an idea.

begoodjen 19 Nov 2013 - How is "It's a bar" a con? It's a microbrewery/pub! The beer is not hit or miss at all. Maybe its just your tastebuds. No parking? It's downtown you park wherever you want!!
Karga 18 Oct 2015 - You can get free samples of beer if you don't want to hit and miss. I don't see why the location of kitchen is a problem since you don't have to work in there. You're a customer, right? If you have claustrophobia, no one is forcing you to go into the kitchen. I doubt you're even allowed. I never noticed any problem with the cleanliness of the bathrooms.

Best brew pub I've been to yet! - Edit
The ataff was stellar, the beer was amazing, and the vegan shwarma was delicious. Cozy, but clean atmosphere, lots of light, and tonnes of character. I'd go back in a heartbeat if I lived in the area and my friend who I went with is going to going back with his partner sometime soon!

Good value and good vegan options - Edit
I've always enjoyed the food here. This is one of the best veg-friendly restaurants in the city. The beer selection is also fantastic for people that are interested in that sort of thing.
The new veggie burger is really good, and daiya cheese can be added. It is a slight improvement over the old portebello burger.
The vegan pizza and nachos are fairly good, but the burger is always my first choice.
Overall good food and good prices, and plenty of vegan options. The servers also understand "vegan" and will ensure the message is communicated to the kitchen. I give it the maximum 4 star rating.
Pros: Good veg options, Fair prices, Great veggie burger

Love this place - Edit
Great pizzas and nachos. Most pizza's on the menu can be made vegan or you can make your own. Servers are very friendly and knowledgeable. I go here often and really enjoy the food. They also will make vegan quesadillas upon request.
Pros: great food, fast service, knowledgeable
