One of the best places for students for a decent vegan choice in Hildesheim

The new Mensa just opened in 2023, improving the canteen experience at the University by a great margin, adding more space and choice and especially longer opening hours. Being situated at the outer edge of town, there are few gastronomical options nearby.

Specifically with the recently established evening canteen the Mensa now provides a culinary supply throughout the day (with an afternoon break). The new facilities are bright and spacey, offer meeting and event spaces, a family room, outdoor seating (which is unfortunately right now cancelled because of vandalism), and a nice view over the campus. Seating areas in the foyer can also be used outside of the gastronomical opening hours.

Regarding the food, it offers a reasonable choice for a small university. My favourites are the vegan bagels and chocotriangles in the cafeteria. The meals are canteen-style, so not highest standard, but also definitely not bad. It makes for a good option when you're too busy to cook for yourself, shows the variety of the vegan diet without being extravagant and serves as a good example of day-to-day vegan eating. The surroundings of the Mensa work as a socialising place, but you can also keep to yourself and disappear in the crowd (which still might be difficult at a uni with around 8.000 students).
