One of the best things in Hong Kong - Edit

When I first came to Hong Kong 2.5 years ago, I entered "Hong Kong vegan" in a search engine and the first thing that popped up was this meetup group. I went to my first meetup the very next day and had a blast since then!

What's so great about this?

- You get to go to different restaurants each week. Always something new, always something to discover.

- No need to worry about whether things are vegan or not. The organizers take great care that they are. Always!

- If you go to a restaurant alone, you can sample maybe 3 dishes. In this group you usually sit with about 10 people at a big table and share food the Chinese way: Everything in the middle and everyone takes some. So the amount of dishes you see at one meetup is easily more than 10. Sometimes up to 20.

- So this is a great way to find out about new restaurants. There is of course some repetition, but generally you get around quite a bit. Through this group I discovered most if not all of my now favorite restaurants in HK!

- The people you sit around those big tables with: Great! A nice mix of expats and locals. I made several good friends through this meetup.

- Last but not least: The organizers are amazing. Shara started the whole thing and now Carrie and Stevie are taking care of even more great meetups. They are extremely well prepared and there are never any problems. They actually take great care to explore options first and not blindly book a random restaurant. Big thanks to you guys!

So can I recommend this to you? Definitely. Don't miss this. Even if you are in town just for a couple of days! Everyone is welcome. There are always several new faces in the group at each meetup. So go and join us now!

Pros: Great selection of restaurants and food, Great co-diners, Great organizers

great way to share ideas and delicious vegan food - Edit

i started joining meat-free hong kong meetups more regularly this year and wonder why i didn't do so earlier.

as a one-plus-year-old vegetarian in a meat-loving city, i often feel like the odd one out when dining with friends. here, i'm right at home amidst vegans, vegetarians, pescetarians, mostly or part-time veg*ns, and even curious or health-conscious omnivores. besides the wide spectrum of meat-free-ness among attendees, there's also a good mix of locals, expats and travellers, which makes it a great forum to listen to and share stories, ideas and recommendations.

most of the time, the organising team takes care of the ordering of food (ensuring it's all vegan) and so we get to share and try a huge variety of dishes, something you can't enjoy when dining solo or as a couple.

if you're hesitant about attending a meetup alone, don't be - most people turn up on their own and are thus open to meeting and conversing with other strangers. stevie (happycow co-ambassador for hk) and the organising team are friendly and do their best to make everyone - first-timers especially - feel at ease. each time a participant arrives, he puts his superb memory to task and re-introduces everyone at the table, spot on. while you're free to choose where to sit, i've noticed that he will take pains to ensure you have at least one or two others next to you who speak your preferred language (usually english/cantonese).

i encourage you to pop by to a meetup if you have the chance.

Pros: get to try an array of dishes, friendly organisers, great place to exchange ideas/recommendations
