It's BBQ for a reason - Edit

Don't waste your time here. They have like 3 vegan or vegetarian options and they are not worth your money. I had the BBQ tofu sandwich & it was simply a block of firm tofu w/ bbq sauce on ONE +1 for their amazing cajun waffle fries though - delish!

Pros: Great fries

Cons: Dark, Bad vegan options

Meh - Edit

This is another one that I thought used to have more options. Or maybe I just thought there were until all the meat dishes became automatic NOs for me. There are a fair amount of veggie sides, but nothing terribly exciting. The tofu 'wings' are actually just slabs of tofu smothered in hot sauce, which...don't get me wrong, I will eat that...but again, not terribly exciting and not what I've come to expect of tofu wings. The vegetarian jambalaya is pretty darn good though and the portion you get is so big you'll be eating leftovers for days. Service is usually friendly and it's always busy, so for a big group where you're the only non-meat eater, it's not the worst option.

Pros: huge portions

Cons: few options

Not vegan, mediocre flavor - Edit

Only 3 things vegetarian you can order: bbq 'wings', bbq sandwich w/fries, or bbq 'ribs' w/mashed potatoes and veggies. Also, had reservations and still had to wait when I got there...

Pros: Decor

Cons: Loud, Busy, Not vegan

Nice place - Edit

203 days till mardi gras! nice southern charm. outdoor seating. 2 floors. what I would think is a ship scale to add to the vibe. Good beer. Tasty bbq sauce. Good tatters. delish mac and cheese. Been here twice 8 months apart. now my go to place in the area.

Mardfi Gras in Milwaukee - and veg-friendly too - Edit

Great cajun food: several excellent dishes, many good dishes; there are sufficient vegetarian options to satisy my vegetarian friend (who actually requests to go there!); dinner portions are very generous (be prepared for leftovers!), and some of the appetizers or side-orders are big enough and/or good enough to be main dishes.
menu available at
(We have not explored the "vegan friendliness".)

Two floors of dining, well-stocked bars, nice selection of beers and wines, Happy Hour 4-6, delicious desserts (that are NOT veg-friendly however). Background music is skewed to New Orleans, and the place can be noisy when busy; nice decor. I've ordered "to-go" from Maxie's several times, no problem; they have friendly and helpful wait-staff.

It's a "first-come-first-served" restaurant; they do not accept reservations (except possibly for large groups), and there can be waits at the door, so go early or go late; and sometimes phonecalls get shuffled to voicemail -- but hey, it's a busy and popular place!! Great for "pre-show" meals or "after-show" dining/drinks.

Pros: great food, great desserts, generous portions, nice atmosphere

Cons: desserts not veg-friendly, no reservations, unknown "vegan friendliness"

Minute Vegan Selection - Edit

Vegetarian section offers 5 items - only 2 "can be made Vegan" - NOT!
No sub for complimentary corn bread, all breads contain milk (including po'boy).
BBQ Tofu is just a slab of tofu out of the package with BBQ sauce.
Side vegetables overcooked with no seasoning.

Pros: Nice interior, Hearty drinks

Cons: Out of the way location, Servers have an attitude, Not Vegan Friendly!

Truly comfort food - Edit

The Pommarita is the best cocktail in the world. The Cajun fries are the most fantastic thing I've ever shoveled into my face. The sweet potato fries are the best balance of creamy and crispy, salty and sweet. The jambalaya is spicy, filling, packed with smoked tofu (is there anything better?) and is served on a platter that can feed at least 3 people. I love you, Maxie.

Pros: Food, Drinks, Atmosphere

Cons: Not enough vegan options, Always busy (good for them!)
