Consigliatissimo

Maurizio’s moved to 9852 home restaurant

Fabulous! Maurizio is the Best Host on Vulcano!

This restaurant has something for everyone! Since the owner, Maurizio is a long time vegan himself we knew we were in good hands. Four stars is the highest rating Happy Cow allows for a restaurant that is not completely vegan, but this is place is definitely worth a visit. Maurizio greeted us and our omnivore friends and after some pleasant conversation he knew just what to serve us all. We (the vegans) were served a delicious eggplant in a rich Berber sauce, black beans, and a vegan eggplant Parmesan (we love eggplant!) all of which paired beautifully with Maurizio’s wine suggestions. Our omnivore dinner companions were served delicious fresh fish entrees. For dessert we had wonderful crispy cookies dipped in sweet wine. All of us were impressed with the quality of the food and had a super fun time at this very special restaurant. We all decided that our dining experience was like going to dinner at a good friend’s house that just happens to be a great chef! Our advice is to trust Maurizio’s intuition and let him guide your dinner (and wine) choices. He’s been doing this a long time and loves his job!

Pros: Maurizio is passionate about food and hosting, Fresh ingredients carefully prepared , Great value and we felt like honored guests!

Hidden gem!

The owner of this place claims he's been vegan for over 40 years. When he heard I am vegan, he didn't even let me order, only asked "wine (yes/no)?" and kept putting amazing food in front of me.

I understand HappyCow's rule "no 5 star unless exclusively vegan", but if any place deserves 5 star, this is the one.

Pros: The owner is a long time vegan., Quality of food., Entertaining chat with the owner.

Maurizio La Forgia - 5 Stars, Excellent Service

I ate at Maurizio’s restaurant today and was enamored by Maurizio’s charming personality and service. He says he’s been vegan for 40 years yet I can see why he would have fish on his menu given the restaurant is in Sicily (not that I am OK with fish, just saying).

Maurizio kindly went through the menu with me to let me know which items could be made vegan (see attached photo). I went with the olive oil pasta with olives and capers and really loved it. He also picked a pepper from outside for me to add to my pasta! Maurizio also gave us a taste of the vegan caponata and vegan biscotti dessert with a sweet Sicilian wine, which was very nice. The food was great overall.

Another reviewer said the options are limited to basic things like pasta…but honestly, this is mostly what the restaurant offers aside from fish dishes. The pasta dishes were executed well and better quality than you’d find at a typical Italian restaurant. 😀

Finally, Maurizio kindly gave me advice on other Sicilian food items that are vegan friendly without me even asking. He’s super nice!

A few vegan options, could do better

This seems to be a local institution, and when we visited it was packed - reservations seem to be a must. The owner, the eponymous Maurizio, is friendly and helpful with suggestions, and the food met the usual high standard of Italian restaurants. The range of vegan options, however, is not really much greater than the usual options of pasta or cheese-free pizzas you will find in most Italian restaurants - when we visited there was a vegetable curry and a plate of black lentils. Coupled with the fact that the service was very slow, I cannot recommend this place without reservations. Hopefully Maurizio's vegan clients, attracted by its presence on Happy Cow, will encourage them to broaden their range of plant-based dishes.

Pros: Generally good food, A few more options than most Italian restaurants, Friendly staff

Cons: Vegan menu could be larger, Slow service
