Let down - Edit
After reading all the great reviews I was excited to give this place a try. I was greatly disappointed to see them using single use plates, cutlery and cups (even if they were paper and wood). I tried the plemenzy as it looked to be a signature dish for them other than soups or burgers. Unfortunately, after waiting a very long time for it to arrive, my wooden spoon appeared to have more flavour to it than the food. A big let down as it was the most expensive item on the menu.

Great good, friendly service, good value, and nice outdoor seating.
Read moreWe were recently in Budapest for a few days and this was the closest vegan restaurant to our hotel, so we went here. We had the Russian pasta, burgers, roasted brussel sprouts, soup, and a couple of drinks. They spoke English making it easy on us. I couldn't believe the quality of the food for the price.

Delicious lunch! - Edit
We had set lunches that included a burger, soup, and drink. I had the chickpea broccoli patty on Russian rye, split pea soup, and herb tea. My husband had the spinach garlic patty and tomato soup. All were delicious and refreshing. The portion size might seem small for a big eater but were good for us. We went at 11:30 on Saturday and had no trouble getting seats. Very nice place.

Small vegan eatery - Edit
The place is fairly small and as it gets popular it may be difficult to get a table on peek hours.
Read moreI've only tried one of the burgers so far - the Oyster Mushroom and Thyme patty with a Rhye Bun. The burger itself was fine but the sauce was not enough. The Bun was really dense and heavy which was made worse by the fact that the burger didn't have enough sauce and so the whole thing was quite dry. But flavorwise it was really good.
As for the garnish, I really wasn't pleased it with. Really really small portion of potatoes and they were quite raw in the middle.
I will comeback for a second chance but as a first experience I wasn't that much impressed.
Pros: location, all vegan
Cons: size of the place, side dishes very small

The best in Budapest for vegans and non-vegans! - Edit
I eat here regularly, and it is always very tasty delicious, and I feel that it is good to my body and soul. They work with high quality ingredients and they make surprisingly good food! Last time I was lucky to try out the winter special menu on a Saturday evening, and it was fantastic! I recommend it for vegans and non-vegans as well!

OK food prepared by a hunter... - Edit
The food at Matrjoska is OK, although it is expensive for what you get. And the owner is kind. But she tried to convince me that eating honey is totally OK because the bees are kept well! Honey is used in many of the foods, so beware.
Read moreApparently the chef hunted and is openly pro-hunting! There are also news that staff are treated badly.
There are so many other restaurants that represent real vegan values. In fact, many of them are within a 2-minute walk. I will not go back to this place until they change the chef and take honey off the menu.
Unfortunately, the system does not allow me to give only 1 star. :(.

Dear Vegancucc, I feel pretty sad, cause as I could see on your profile, your opinion is to not harm eachother.. So what's that if not harming a place, what is also a business, what gives quality, valuable, grran and Vegan food for people, when every person walk out with a slime and full of good food!? The chef (who's NOT the owner) not a pro hunter, and he not agree with any of these things even, that he kept animals and eat meat.. did you born as a Vegan?.. don't think so?we all progress, and getting better and also we all different.. so why should we harm anyone because of our view of life..? All options can be without honey, and usually there are 2 at most 3 things sweetened w honey.. from 20-22.. and I wish you could see the kitchen..badly treated food?.. why do you think? have you been there.. especially everything.. is made FRONT OF THE CUSTOMERS.. thets the honest kitchen?I totally respect Your opinion dear Vegancucc, and try to understand.. For our progress we have to ask and don't say empty words without being sure?hope you understand my words! much love and take care!

Dear Vegancucc,
Read moreYes, we are proud that our chef discontinued hunting long time ago and became fully cruelty free. He is the best chef we have ever worked with and we are very glad that we have such capacity. Yes, we are proud that we have the best team both in the kitchen and in the service area. Yes, we are proud that we do not treat anyone badly. Yes, we are proud that we inform everybody in which food is prepared with honey. Yes, we are proud that we do not say any bad words of our competitors (especially not from those who are in a 2 minute walk). Yes, we are proud that we are not hiding behind a nickname and hurt other's businesses and write comments in English while being Hungarian....What we are mostly proud of is that a significant part of our guests are carnivors (meat eaters) and they come often back to us. Our real mission is to provide cruelty free option to people, to let them try vegan options and make them satisfied with the quality of the vegetarian/vegan food. We, the owners of Matrjoska Kroshka, were not born vegetarian. The owner you met, closed a famous and successful meat offering restaurant, Matrjoska, because she became vegetarian less than 2 years ago. We all progress in our lives. We ask you next time when you open the door of our place leave your agressivity, cruelty behind you and come with an open heart.

Great concept but small portions - Edit
Pro: the owner is super friendly and cheerful and the decor of the small shop is great. Be sure to mention to her if you are vegan because some items have honey in them!
Read moreCons: Unfortunately the portions are reaally small. I had soup and pelmeny- instead of a real meal, that combo was more a snack and I had to got everywhere afterwards to really get full. (If you're on a budget, I would suggest going elsewhere).
Of course you can argue about how the nutrients are worth it and how it's all made with love etc. etc.....well, love don't fill my stomach, you know what I'm sayin'.
The pelmemy only had about 7 in a serving. For my fellow Russians the filling might be a bit... unusual. The soup was ok, nothing special. Personally I would perhaps suggest getting the burger as it seems quite popular and a larger portion.
So if I'm honest, I would give 3 stars for the food for the quality/quantity..but the owner deserves an extra star, hence 4.

Yummy and special! - Edit
Since my husband is from Russia, I had to try the homemade Pelmeny. They were super-good, nevertheless like the vegan ones my mother in law makes a little bit better, they are a little more hearty and thicker as the ones in Matrjoshka Kroshka. But that is a matter of taste. We also tried the king oyster mushroom and beet root burger with the black bun. I’m a little bit spoiled with burgers, so it was not the best burger I ever had, but still very yummy! The cucumber-tomato-cabbage salad was super-good! What I didn’t like, is that the food is served on / with disposable plates / mugs / cutlery (at least paper / wood and no plastic) even if you eat it in the restaurant itself. Would be great if they change this concept. I recommend to bring your own fork, knife etc. if you plan to go there.

Amazing tastes, trendy place, friendly owner and staff - Edit
We went there on a Saturday after the opening times changed and because my brother suggested this place and oh my was I surprised at the quality of the foods! I ordered fig cream soup and a mockingjay burger (had to make an exception today me being raw vegan, lol), both were out of this world delicious made with great care of organic materials. The owner Natasa is really friendly, along with all the staff, asked how we liked the food and we even had a nice long chat about veganism and how important it is to open people’s eyes to the suffering of animals so they may stop consuming them. The place itself is a bit small but attention is paid to every last detail making it really peaceful to be at having your meal. The menu changes every day and according to season so everyone can find something they like. I for one will surely go back every time I am near this place because the food is amazing and who doesn’t like to enjoy a both wonderful looking and tasting meal from time to time? :)

Comfort food in chic settings - Edit
The restaurant is on the small side but there is outdoor seating available. The best way to describe to food is refined comfort. You can tell they put a lot of care into making it and it all comes out just picture perfect. Do order the pelmeny as it is quite unique and beyond delicious. It's like the offspring of a tortellini and a pierogi. The soups on offer when we visited was a cold cucumber dill soup and a warm red onion cowberry soup. Both were flavors we had never encountered before and would definitely order again. The cucumber dill was refreshing and savory while the red onion cowberry was warm with a subtle sweetness. We didn't order the burger but we saw a lot being ordered so it's probably also a hit. The only downside is that they are only opened 5 days a week during the brunch/lunch hours.

Amazing fusion of Russo-Hungaro Cuisine - Edit
My wifey and I came by Matrjoska Kroshka for brunch today. Wow! Uhhhh-mazing offerings. The restaurant is the perfect embodiment of a Matrioshka doll. Each layer is more brilliant than the last. The decor is wonderful. It takes traditional elements of Russian culture and fuses it with a trendy modern Hungarian style. Though small (as the restaurant's name implies), the space is VERY cute and cozy. The staff and owner, Natasha, are so friendly and hospitable. They walked us through the entire philosophy and menu (in Hungarian for me, as well as in Russian and English for my wifey). The place is so clean and eco-friendly. 100% Organic. They compost all food scraps. The chef can adjust the order regardless of your dietery needs.
Read moreWe ordered the pelmeni dish and a beet root burger. They were both divine! My Russian wifey has never had Russian-style food outside of Eastern Europe that was this good. We chose the Russian black bread bun for the burger, which was so fresh and delicious. We're brimming with happiness and sunshine after our meal. So much so, that we felt compelled to write this review right away. Come visit this gem in Budapest. It's marvelous. You won't regret it!!!
Pros: Fresh and organic, Eco-friendly, Delicious
Cons: The place is a little small, but cozy.

Thanks for your comment. However my Dutch has faded away since I worked in Enkhuizen long time ago (for 2 years) I understood that you liked our small streetfood restaurant and claimed it as best in Budapest in vegetarian/vegan category. This is exactly our aim/mission to be the best but be sure that we are glad to see that more and more vegetarian/vegan places are being opened these days throughout in Hungary. We like each of them and hope that those will also attract our carnivore friends for a meat-free meal. Thus our world will become a better place every day......

Healthy, delicious, nutritious, and awesome staff - Edit
They have just recently started so there is room for improvement (eg. More Ambient music @ background for mood & a sense of privacy and chill, improving atmosphere so it matches the warmth of the staff:), but the food & service is excellent. Soups, burgers (I felt worried it wouldn't be satisfying alone but it's sooo nutritious and Flavorful), smoothies, pasta, also in menu ... Changing selection, can't get bored :) the chef consciously puts the food&drinks together and REALLY cares for quality serving. Relatively tiny but manageable portions (meaning, it's not much at all yet fills you up with nutrients... Concentrated awesome).
