Chewy sweet potato balls

The staff working at the fried sweet potato ball half of this combined stand was really friendly, and we chatted for a while as he was freshly frying a batch of these delightfully chewy desserts. He asked if I were planning to participate in the Mazu Pilgrimage that was starting the same evening. I had no idea that it had been postponed until that evening in 2020 because of the pandemic: I’d thought it was completely canceled! I brought my own dishware and requested no skewers so as to eliminate any generated waste. I wonder if he threw in a few extra because of that. One order is NT$20, and three orders costs a mere NT$50, but I think that would have been excessive even for me. 😝 I’m glad I stopped by while in Shalu on my way to Taichung Seaport Art Center and Gaomei Wetlands.

I’m not big on grilled mochi, so I can’t comment on those. They did look pretty good though.

Pros: friendly staff, delicious sweet potato balls
