Okay Indian Food

I don't particularly care for Indian food, so take my bias into consideration. This appears to be the only Happy Cow-listed Paramaribo restaurant currently operating. (I haven't checked Souposo.) In that sense, this place is head and shoulders above. I went during a vegetarian plate. It was fine. Too lightly spiced for my palate. And too many fried things. (Fried rice, pakora.) Staff assured me that things were vegan as indicated and also Halal.

Pros: It's operating!

Cons: Not to my taste.

Probably the best Indian restaurant in Paramaribo

Apart from roti shops (most of which have fairly limited vegetarian options), Indian food is surprisingly difficult to find in Paramaribo.

This restaurant has a huge range of vegetarian options, almost all of which are vegan or can be made vegan upon request. The starters are mostly deep-fried snacks, such as samosa, barra and kachori. A variety of vegetable curries, dhals, breads (e.g. stuffed parathas) and rice dishes are available. Unfortunately none of the desserts are suitable for vegans. For drinks, the options include beer, wine, soft drinks and lassis.

The owner speaks excellent English and is happy to provide guidance or adjust the dishes according to your tastes/requirements. For example, onion/garlic can be omitted for those who follow strict Jain diets (note that the food is quite heavy on oil and garlic here by default).

The food is moderately expensive by Paramaribo standards, and inexpensive by Western standards. I enjoyed everything I ate here - it is not exceptional Indian food but certainly the best that I could find in Suriname.

The restaurant is set in a residential area a little outside the city centre, but close enough to reach by walking or by taking a very cheap taxi. We ate outside on the terrace, which was pleasant.

I also recommend that vegetarian and vegan visitors to Paramaribo go to the Blauwgrond neighbourhood where there are several excellent Indonesian (Javanese) restaurants - Mirosso has a particularly extensive vegetarian selection.

Pros: Huge range of vegetarian & vegan options, Inexpensive by Western standards, Friendly owner

Cons: No vegan desserts, Outside the city centre
