Large natural foods store. Has a vegetarian-friendly deli cafe (Serves meat, vegan options available.). Open Mon-Fri 9:00am-8:00pm, Sat 9:00am-7:00pm, Sun 10:00am-6:00pm.
I love Marlenes and frequent here weekly. Love their made to order vegan sandwiches and vegan gluten free soups of the day. Best Tofu options, vegan proteins and cheeses, bread options. Occasional vegan cooking classes too.
Marlene’s can be a bit pricey but they have a lot of specialty natural food items (e.g. carob powder, date syrup, liquid lecithin) and other vegan products (e.g. cheeses, meats, sauces, jerkies, chips, dips). What makes Marlene’s so great is it’s bakery/deli. They have a great salad bar with a couple of vegan dressings, including a vegan Caesar, and almost always some sort of baked tofu as a protein option in addition to the standard chickpeas and nuts/seeds. The deli can also make a variety of vegan sandwiches to order, including falafel, grilled cheese, and blackened tofu. They usually have at least one prepared vegan soup as well. Common vegan baked goods include pumpkin bread (without or without chocolate chips!), raspberry oat bars, and chocolate cake. There is also a small refrigerator designated for prepared sandwiches from Hillside Quickie if you don’t want to wait for a sandwich to be made!
This is where I learned about vegan. Many resources and sometimes classes. The staff is very helpful. There is also B12 shots I have seen given there. Even has vegan supplements.
Marlene's has been the best while visiting Tacoma from St. Louis. I was so happy to stop by and find something healthy and delicious to eat. I ordered the veggie and rice with tahini dressing and an amazing green smoothie. I love this place so much. It had many plant based items I couldn't find else where. And it's a wonderful alternative to Whole Foods, especially when the one closest is so picked over.
Marlene’s is a small market and very expensive, but you will find lots of specialty items here! They have stuff you can’t even find at Whole Foods but it will cost you. The food is really good though! You have to pay for quality.
A staple of Tacoma!!! Salad bar, juice bar, fresh pastries. Besides the excellent produce, staple "fridge," supplements, pet foods, beer, wine, and everything else you want from a medium sized health food store!
Lots of awesome stuff here. They sell a lot of specialty vegan items. Their juice bar and salad bars are great. They always have a vegan soup, and other vegan option at the cafe, and they serve quickie too sandwiches!
