27th Street (at btwn 74th and 75 St), Mandalay, Myanmar

In the city center. Closed during low season, but the owner is here anyway - it is good to pay visit so that she knows that there is interest. Look for the sign outside the restaurant that says, "Treat animals kindly by not eating them." Confirmed open, Aug 2016.

Good cheap food - Edit

Stayed around the corner from this place so we are here a few times. Everything was really cheap and the food was great. Definitely worth stopping by while you're in Mandalay.

Pros: Delicious

Cons: None

POSTO TRISTE - Edit

Oasis in a vegan desert - Edit

Although it cost us a taxi fare every time we went, we really liked this restaurant. Nice people, consistently good food, in fact beautifully tasty at times, it was our saviour in our first stop in Myanmar and before we could get our heads around some of the street food.

Pumpkin curry, Tea leaf salad, Aubergine dip 3,500, potato curry with coconut milk and tamarind 3,500, chappattis, tofu noodle soup, a rather odd daal, pineapple juice were all good to outstanding with prices around the 2,000 to 3,500 Kyat mark it may be viewed as slightly higher than some places but I'd happily eat here again. Sadly some things were not yet in season but we never got bored eating there on 3 separate days. Plenty of choice for vegans and the man speaks good English, is very friendly and
Can adjust dishes to suit.

Some mixed veg/non-veg Indian and cafe recommendations in other sites were actually desperately bad. We've eaten in plenty of sketchy cafes and restaurants in India but the filthy roadside settings were comparable with places that our Indianfriends would not contemplate so if you are planning ahead, save yourself some wasted time and disappointment when hungry and go for Marie Min.

A 2nd alternative would be Diamond Ring Indian pure vegetarian and sweet centre which offers lovely Masala Dosa 1500 Kyats And chai 500 Kyats. Check timings 09-91002870, 5195494. as they closed the kitchen early one time around 8:30pm. Sweets were pretty good though! 117, 35th Street, between 75th & 76th Streets.

Pros: Flavours, Friendly, Nice upstairs setting with fans

Cons: Toilet downstairs not the best

excellent - Edit

Wonderful to find this great veggie place in Mandalay where I really struggled to find anywhere to eat as most restaurants stank of fish sauce!! The food was delicious, loved the chapati.

Cozy place, clean and very warm people.
The food was very tasty with the pumpkin curry being our personal favorite.
We had tofu vegetable curry, pumpkin curry , aubergine dip, rice, papadam bread and a bottle of water and paid 12.000 kyats.
Highly recommended.

Pros: Friendly staff , Good portions , Nice atmosphere

Good Restaurant - Edit

Food is really tasty, try the ginger salad. Clean, quiet, prices ok.
Fruit shakes served with sugar, ask for less if you don't like.

Good restaurant! - Edit

I liked this place. Mandalay is a very chaotic city, and here you can find some peace. Clean, wide choice of food, tasty dishes. I recommend it!

Good place with good selection - Edit

This is kind of a touristy place with somewhat higher prices (mostly 3000k as of early 2015 for dishes). They seem to have a lot of Chinese influenced dishes (a fairly big influence on Myanmar cuisine). They have good service and they now appear to be open until 10 PM. The food was good.

Pros: good food, good service

Cons: some of the food was a bit bland

worth going. moderate price - Edit

Good food. My wife and I had a curry + salad and two steam rice: 6,500ks. Mains around 3,000ks. (Dec/14). A pricy compared to other restaurants (we had fried rice and soup in the evening at a local restaurant for 2,600 total). But worth going.

Treat AnimalsKindly By Not Eating Them restaurant - Edit

Atmospheric seating on second floor overlooking a neat alley with antique shops. Owner helpful and passionate about vegetarianism. Food was good. We had okra dish which was very good. They used to be owners of similar shop in Bagan which was sold and is now the Moon restaurant.

check out Marie-Min Mandalay - Edit

Visited Mandalay again in November 2009. Lot of new restaurants since I last visited in 2001. Also went to Marie-Min vegetarian restaurant again. Still a very nice and quiet place to sit down and have something to eat or drink. Everything is freshly cooked in boiled water. Great chappatis en vegetable curry.

A bit more expensive then the chinese places. And no beer. This is really a pitty. I heared that the price of a alcoholpermit is high. But the owner was thinking about getting one. Maybe by now he has.

The restaurant is moved from the groundfloor to the first floor where it gets a really nice breese. Friendly english speaking owner and staff. Owner told business is slack since in the LP edition of 2009 it was suggested the prices in Marie Min are a bit high. I found them comparable to what you pay in other traveler eatingplaces. I wrote down some information about the menu.

Vegetarian curry k1200; rice k300; chapati k300; fried noodles with vegetables and fried eggs k1500; somosa 7 pieces k1500; banana/papaya milkshake k1200; lassi/bananalassi k1200; coke k300; tea k300

But beware. Changing rates change fast in Myanmar. So prices are bound to change too! Check it out yourself en feel free to edit!

Pros: nice food, nice place, nice staff

Cons: no beer
