Serves meat, vegan options available. A restaurant/bar located in front of the Hotel Palacio dos Melos in a restored house in the historic center. Serves typical regional food with a modern and cool touch. Has many vegan dishes on the menu, including mushroom pastry, sauteed veggies, chickpea salad and soy ice cream. Staff understands veganism. Upon advance request, will prepare a (most times regional) dish using veggies, vegan sausages, tofu, etc. Has regular cultural events. Open Tue-Thu 11:00-02:00, Fri-Sat 11:00-04:00, Sun 11:00-02:00.

Only one 100% vegan dish - Edit
Kind of a traditional fancy restaurant. Has good wines. But only one 100% vegan dish. Pane pasta with veggies and... orange slices. Interesting, tasty, but protein less

I really enjoyed my dinner at Maria Xica. The staff were super friendly and the service was really good.
Read moreI had the pasta penne with legumes and orange sauce, which is a vegan option, and was absolutely delicious.
The only think that could be improved would be to have more vegan options, but given the fact that this is a restaurant that serves all types of meals, including meat dishes, I am pretty happy with what I had. Also, the vegetarian burger option could be served without cheese and would also be a vegan dish.
Pros: Very friendly staff , Food quality and quantity

Restaurante bonito, atendimento super simpático. Comida deliciosa e óptima apresentação. Legumes à Brás e Mousse de chocolate com amendoim excelentes! Boa relação qualidade preço.

Great dinner - Edit
3 vegan choices on the menu for dinner. I Chose the mushroom dish with tofu (mushroom bulhao pato) 8 euros, great serving( see pic) . It was delicious. There was a quinoa and Apple salad and cabbage soup for starters, request no side chorizo. Enjoyed a nice bottle of red wine ( Dona Santana) Could not see any egg or milk fining on the bottle. Staff were attentive and helpful

Beware - avoid this place - Edit
The owner said when we called to book he was "vegetarian", and that he "had everything under control" on the phone. When we arrived he talked to us and said that he did not consume anything of animal origin, eggs or milk. Suspiciously we ignored the fact that maybe he didn't realize what a vegetarian or Vegan is. It was confirmed when I saw bread toasts containing dairy on my plate. A veggie or Vegan would never let this happen.
Read moreI'm always on sight so I noticed this because I know those bread toasts from watching labels on the supermarket. The main dish was: mushrooms, onions and the so-called toasts (a vegan "woodpecker" they named it) - It is almost hilarious presenting such a meal to a Vegan! With nothing to go with. After complaining about the dish they improved it with introduction of asparagus and tofu instead. Still I had to complain also to have rice server to go with it.
It was clear that our service was always placed in the background at the expense of others. And hence the delays were too long. I leave the ridiculous example of the birthday cake being served, and the champagne popping 45 minutes later!
No more visits from me. For all Vegans and Vegetarians - there are much better options in Viseu. Avoid this at all cost.
Cons: Ultra slow service, Crap food served, I'm almost sure the owner lied to us

There wasn’t a lot of vegan options but they did change the ingredients of some meals. The vegan options were great, I enjoyed the place and staff were friendly but didn’t quite get the vegan/vegetarian concept and/or difference.

During the opening schedule only the bat was open, not the restaurant. Has to be updated here. As they do not have a workable homepage anywhere else would be nice to know!!
