A delightful experience - Edit
My two visits to Mai Chie Kitchen were the highlight of my recent visit to Japan. Michael and Chie are a lovely vegan couple, and their restaurant is a labour of love. Michael is a thoughtful person, and it was a privilege to hear his observations on Japan. Chie is a quiet and gentle person and an extraordinarily talented chef. Visiting their restaurant was like visiting the home of friends--friends, that is, who happen to be talented chefs.
Read moreThe food that Michael and Chie serve is delicious, authentic, and natural. I can imagine bringing a non-vegan here and not have them realize that they just ate at a vegan restaurant. A great deal of thought has gone into the selection, preparation, and presentation of the offerings. Even the rice, which at first appears to be regular Japanese white rice, is in fact polished specifically to retain fibre and nutritional content.
The restaurant is a short train ride from the Hiroshima station. Google Maps will guide you there and will even tell you the gate of departure of your train. If in doubt, ask a station attendant.
Michael hails from England and speaks fluent Japanese, and Chie-san is Japanese, so you are covered whether you are an English speaker or Japanese. Also, the prices are very reasonable. I look forward to returning on my next visit.

Vegan cafe inside an apartment block! - Edit
Maichie Kitchen recently opened and they’re one of the only fully vegan shops in Hiroshima! They’re open on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from 11am to 5pm and sell lots Japanese-style breads and desserts. They’ve got a little eat in space which is cosy and relaxing. They make a hemp cheesecake which is really nice and have other things like cinnamon rolls, donuts, cakes, cookies, tarts and some special bread based things that are unique to japan. They have a nice drink menu with a cute pink lemonade and matcha latte and do one or two main lunch meals which change depending on the season- like a tan tan ramen, sesame miso ramen and vegan burgers . They’re also making handmade fermented hemp and cashew artisan hard and soft cheeses, which go nicely with their organic sourdough bread. They have their own handmade chocolate bars- including a matcha white chocolate bar. The first lunch was a spicy tan tan noodle bowl and the next week will also have burgers and sushi. They make everything with organic ingredients and don’t use things containing artificial additives, preservatives or chemicals.
Read moreThe location is 5 minutes from the local station called Mitaki which is about 10 minutes from the main Hiroshima station, so it’s easy to get to from town. Would recommend if you’re looking for something really yummy and a bit different from the usual cafe/shop menu.

Cosy café, great food, lovely staff - Edit
Super cute café ran by the absolute sweetest people in a really cool environment, an apartment building. There's a little space to eat or you can order for take-out. Had the tantan noodles that were just DIVINE. That's what I love about HappyCow - I would never have found this place without it.

Lovely place - Edit
The opening times on Happycow are confusing, but I checked and can confirm that they open just on Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 11am-16pm! Mai Chie Kitchen are a new vegan spot in Hiroshima, but their menu doesn’t disappoint. The ingredients are high quality, the flavour is exceptional and the prices are very reasonable considering they use almost exclusively organic whole foods ingredients. They have a range of lunch options, nice drinks and various sweet and savoury bakery classics, and also some vegan specialty items like handmade artisan cheeses and chocolates and matcha cookies. The place is run by a vegan English man and his vegan Japanese wife, so they are very helpful and welcoming to English-speaking customers and love talking about vegan life in Japan.
Read moreWould recommend anyone trying this place out if you’re visiting Hiroshima. Although their a little takeaway shop, there’s a little table and 2 chairs which will fit 2 people, but if you ask ahead on their Instagram they’re very helpful and accommodating and adaptable and can make almost anything on request.

Just THE BEST ✨ - Edit
Me and my friend had been there last Saturday around 12:30, and we met the cutest people !
Read moreOnly two people are managing this place and it’s so good !
The food was absolutely delicious (we had two vegan burgers, a cafe latte and a matcha latte with cinnamon rolls and red bean bun), everything was so tasteful that we came back the day after (Sunday) !
When we said we will come back the next day they even prepared what we wanted to eat in advance even if it wasn’t on this week menu (I took the noodles, my friend a sandwich with a gateau au chocolat and a cheesecake ).
Everything is homemade, organic and they even made their own chocolate bar !
I took a white chocolate with strawberries it was absolutely delicious !!
Absolutely lovely conversation with them, you don’t have to worry about English at all !
We will try to come back if we can! There are still so much things we want to try !
