Staff member didn’t have a clue - Edit
I went to this restaurant a few months ago and was extremely disappointed. There was only one member of staff working at the front, who when I asked which dishes were suitable for vegans (menu says vegetarian and I couldn’t see anything obviously not made with cream) she shrugged and looked confused then pointed to the vegetarian area and told me that this was all suitable for ‘vegetarians’. We had seen on their website that they say they cater for vegans, which is why my friends had chosen to go there knowing I would be able to eat there. The staff member didn’t know the difference between vegan and vegetarian, so went to speak to the chef to find out and came back to tell me that I could have the vegetarian curry. I asked her to confirm if it was made using ghee or cream or not, and she said ‘usually’. I wanted to clarify she knew that I was vegan and so I didn’t eat these things (or anything from an animal!) and so off she went to speak to the chef again. She seemed like a new younger member of staff and so maybe didn’t know their menu. I spoke Portuguese and English (she understood more) with her to try and make sure she understood what I couldn’t have.
Read moreI felt nervous ordering and as I was with a group of friends who had ordered (they weren’t vegan), felt I had to trust the chef (who did try to reassure me).
Poppadoms were automatically brought to the table (we didn’t order these and didn’t really want them) with some dips which weren’t suitable for me to eat (made with yoghurt), and I thought that perhaps she should have said what was in them, as if I hadn’t known what it was, I could have accidentally tried something not vegan.
The meal was okay but it wasn’t great. It lacked flavour and the spice level was very low. I felt that they should have asked me how I enjoyed my food, as I do like a fair amount of spice. The plain boiled rice I ordered was acceptable. The food took a long time to be created, even though we were the only customers in the restaurant (we went there quite early as we had planned in the evening after), and we weren’t checked to make sure we were happy with everything. The staff member just left us alone and so wouldn’t really rate them well for their service. When the bill arrived we noted that we had been charged for the popadoms that we hadn’t ordered or eaten, which felt was a bit cheeky, but we had waited so long for everything that we just hurried to pay it to leave and be able to go to our evening plans.
Cons: Advertised as caters to vegans but menu doesn’t., Staff not knowledgeable about their dishes. , Charged for items we didn’t order or want.

A charming family-run authentic Indian Restaurant with good vegan choices - Edit
Maharaja Patiala is a family-run restaurant headed by a friendly and very amiable chef-proprietor from South India. There are ample vegan choices and this was my second visit.
Read moreThe food is beautifully presented and absolutely delicious. Shared between the three of us, we enjoyed chana aloo, aloo mutter, vegetable jalfrezi, mushroom rice, chana saag, bombay aloo and a roti each. Every dish was tasty, filling and left us with huge smiles on our faces! All three of us have eaten a huge variety of Indian food (mostly in the UK), and Maharaja Patiala holds its own against some of the best places we have eaten.
This restaurant is excellent value for money, with the beer refreshingly cold. I'd give it 5 stars, but HappyCow only allows a maximum of 4 stars for an omni restaurant.
Pros: Good vegan options, Willingness to go the extra mile, Friendly, excellent service

Maharajah Patilala has been taken over by new owners since my last review, so this is a new one.
Read moreOne of those warm, unopressive Algarvian summer evenings in the charming and unpretentious town of Sao Bras de Alportel: there is no better place to dine than Maharajah Patiala. The new owners, George and Shiney, have preserved and built upon the charm and authenticity of the restaurant with a new, extensive menu.
All three of us are Vegan, and Maharajah Patiala did not disappoint. The Onion Bhajis are infused with cumin seed and are delicious. The Vegetable Samsosa full of tasty, well-prepared vegetables. For the main course, we shared Chana Masala, Tarka Dal, Aloo Gobi, Vegetable Xacutti, Lemon Rice and Vegetable Saag: all were a delight and generous in their portion size. The Chapati, Roti and Naan were also very appetizing and great accompaniments to the meal. Each dish is unique and special in its own right, there is much interest and delight in the spicing of the food.
Vegan dishes are readily avaiable and the staff are happy to prepare them..
The hospitality of George, Shiney and their staff is extraordinary, they make every customer feel like they are dining in their own home: Maharajah Patiala is a special experience, highly recommended!
