A very sweet cafe, and a real hidden gem. Great furniture and decor make it a cosy stop. Food, cakes, drinks were all top notch. The owner is delightful, and her dad is a gent 😊🥂🌱💚

Tasty food in a cosy cafe - Edit
Found this lovely vegan cafe on a stopover on our way home from holiday. The food was very tasty - I had the pizza panini and lemon cheesecake, partner had the New Yorker. Salads were very tasty too. Took a quiche home to takeaway and it was delicious.

Lovely place, lovely staff and fabulous food! We had the quiche, pizza toastie and cakes. All were absolutely delicious, if we lived in the area we would definitely be back, however we were on holiday so only get the one visit!

We had such a lovely lunch here - we had paninis (pizza mozzarella and tomato) and they were so delicious. We also tried a few of their cake options including the rocky road, which was incredible. The owners are also lovely. Highly recommend😄

Took away a Rocky Road and a Lotus/Biscoff/Speculas/Speculoos (delete which you don't call the biscuits) cheesecake. Huge portions - could only eat half of one in a sitting.
All vegan. Efficient, friendly (but not annoying) owners.

Was recommended to visit here, travelled from Ilfracombe especially. I had a pizza panini with two salads, one being potato salad which I’m not usually a fan of but it was really nice. Wife had a ‘chicken’ baguette with two side salad, cous cous was yummy. All fresh food made to order. Had cheesecake to take away which was delicious. Highly recommend a visit!

Great vegan cafe with excellent range of sandwiches baguettes and paninis which all come with choice of 2 salads. Also pasta specials. Tasty food with good portion sizes! Exceptional cakes too! Loved the Alice in Wonderland theming

Had a couple of New York sandwiches and shared a slice of cheesecake. Freshly made and really delicious sandwiches with a choice of salads. The cheesecake was something else, I would never have guessed it was plant based, absolutely delicious and a must try.

I am a regular customer of this beautiful little cafe, and usually grab a take away lunch. The sandwiches and salads are to die for and my favourites are the New Yorker deli sandwich, which is huge and packed with wonderful flavours of vegan pastrami, vegan cheese and mustard and pickles. The salads are fresh and tasty, I especially love the salsa salad with cherry tomatoes and mango. The coffee is great and the quiche and cakes are also delicious. The owners are friendly and the decor is really quirky and light. An absolute gem, I cannot recommend it highly enough!

We're so pleased to have 'Mad Hatters' in Barnstaple. All vegan, great menu and always provide well for our gluten-free requirements too! I'm rather addicted to their New Yorker sandwich, which comes with two side salads and fills me up for the day. Their quiche is also amazing; light fluffy vegan quiche the like of which I haven't tasted in a long time. And their hummus - wow! Home made and delicious. My husband loves the gluten-free cakes too, a real treat for the weekend. Can't recommend this place enough, a welcome addition to Barnstaple, we used to have to travel for miles to be catered for this well.

Mad Hatter is a sweet wee spot. Charmingly decorated, it’s a delightful addition to Barnstaple’s cafe scene and a scrumptious addition for the town’s plant-based foodies. The menu has been carefully crafted to suit the small space. The food is fresh, plentiful, and reasonably priced; the service friendly and accommodating. This place is my go-to for warm, filling sandwiches. Try the New Yorker. You won’t be disappointed. Looking forward to seeing how far the folks at Mad Hatter take this gem.

Recently opened cafe with plans to expand to include a bar area. Staff were really nice and helpful. For me the menu needs more variety, there wasn’t much choice for someone who isn’t a fan of tomato. I took away some potato salad for tea which was ok. Being a lover of vegan cake, and having had some excellent ones over the years, the sweet treats didn’t really look up to par so I didn’t treat myself on this occasion. I’m sure with time this place will go from strength to strength and wish the owners every success.

Stopped here twice on a recent visit to Barnstaple. Excellent food in a convivial setting, the owners are very friendly. The food is very reasonably priced and put together in a loving way. A great range of salads and sandwiches amongst other things. Cakes were very nice as well. Be warned the pot of tea is rather large for one person. Great food experience.

New cafe, been open around a week, friendly service. Great sandwich, panini and salad options. We had the New Yorker, which was especially delicious, and the Hummus sandwiches. Very reasonably priced at £6 per sandwich, and each sandwich also came with two side salad options (four to pick out of in total). We chose the salsa and a cous cous, both fresh and tasty. Sandwiches made fresh while you wait, with a choice of breads. We also ordered a milkshake assuming would be homemade, but unfortunately if wasn’t. Unsure if the sweet treats are homemade - didn’t ask. Well worth a visit, and would definitely revisit if in the area.
