Mad Cucumber - Edit
Sadly a bit disappointed with my experience at Mad Cucumber, especially after reading all the positive reviews. Maybe it was just an ‘off day’ but I was left feeling very underwhelmed by my meal and visit. They were very busy that day and I did note other customers had also left food. I believe they’ve also recently had a change of management.
Read moreI visited for lunch and ordered a special of cauliflower tacos at around £13. They arrived pretty quickly but the flavours did not complement each other at all and the standard of cooking for me was below par. The cauliflower was very bland, the roasted chickpeas not crunchy or flavoursome, the wedges had obviously been reheated and were not crispy at all, and the salad I’m sad to say was one of the most boring salads I’ve ever come across in nearly ten years as a vegan. Admittedly I ordered without tomato, but no dressing, very little flavour, creativity or imagination. The ranch dip had a nice tang but was very runny. The ‘taco’ bread was more like a thick wrap/naan style, was dense and chewy. I also ordered a chai latte which was forgotten about until I’d reminded them when they came to take my plate. They did apologise and brought the chai over, but it was unfortunately the worst chai I have ever had. Not mixed properly, no distinct chai flavour, very very watery and was like trying to drink molten lava even after sitting with it for over 15 minutes. I gave up on it despite having paid for it. Customer service could have been better in my view. Positives for me were that dogs are welcome, it’s a central location and the ARA info in the tables.

Dear Libra77,
Read moreWe are very sorry to hear that your experience at our cafè was disappointing.
Just a couple of notes after reading your review.
The special you ordered wasn’t tacos but flatbread therefore not a crunchy bread, chickpeas&cauliflower were roasted and baked in the oven with several spices, the potato wedges we make are not fried but hand cut and roasted in the oven so normally they wouldn’t be crunchy as you might expect from chips instead. We are sorry that your drink was forgotten, when we get very busy being such a small team sometimes we fail & we are sorry to hear you didn’t like your chai; we prepare our own mix of spices and customers generally love it.
Overall we would like to apologise if your experience wasn’t what you expected but we would like to see you again so that you could give us a second chance.

Many thanks for your reply. The cauliflower dish was on the special board as cauliflower and chickpea taco so when it came on a flatbread I was a little surprised. Sadly the flavours (lack of) of this dish didn’t work at all in my humble opinion, however maybe other customers enjoyed it. The wedges were clearly reheated and although I expect they won’t always be very crispy, these tasted pretty stale. You can see from my photo how watery the chai latte is, I’ve never had a chai latte like it and I drink quite a few as you can see from my other reviews. I don’t live locally however if in the area I’d certainly pop in again, as I said in my review I appreciated the cafe and staff were busy that day but that obviously doesn’t alter my experience on this particular occasion.

We have been coming here for 5 years and it was always tasty and delicious. The service is friendly and attentive. The owners might have changed but you won’t taste it. It is the same high standard. We loved every bite and will be back soon.

A fully vegan and dog friendly cafe in Bournemouth. Came for lunch and we had seitan wrap special, avocado madness and a side of marinaded tofu which the dog enjoyed.

Amazing looking cakes and great milkshake - Edit
There is a cabinet full of different flavoured cakes, different brownies and tray bakes, cookies, cheesecakes and normal cakes, which looked amazing and were SO popular !! I got a biscoff milkshake which was really good and sat by the window. The atmosphere in there is really nice and the staff were really kind.

Independent vegan cafe - Edit
In a great location in central Bournemouth. It was handy for me that they opened early. I was looking for something to take away to eat later for lunch. Although they offer a breakfast menu first thing I was able to pick up a burrito to take away (they use vegware packaging which was a plus). It was both tasty and filling.

2021 Update:
Made it back to Bournemouth so visited Mad Cucumber for lunch. Loved the food and the atmosphere. We had a tofu and satay wrap and a Mexican inspired bowl. Both were really tasty.

Great vegan food! - Edit
Great vegan ‘cafe’ type food! The food is amazing but don’t do big enough portions to fill me up. I’ve had a few meals there and always end up eating again not long after. Everything also seems to contain lots of sugar unnecessarily.
