Macquarie St Food Store

This is a great little cafe with a big range of vegetarian options on the menu. Most vegie options can easily be made vegan, and staff are happy to accommodate :)

I've been here three times this year (August, October, December 2010) and although its a great place to take omnivorous friends when hungover, you can probably do better in Hobart if you're picky. Price-wise its very reasonable, portion sizes are generous but not over the top, and the staff (although quite young and strangely unaware of what "vegan" means) are pretty obliging if you spell things out to them- "no egg, no cheese, no milk, no yoghurt, no cream, no dairy at all please and thankyou". That said a couple of the waiters are pretty awesome.

Its a nice relaxed vibe and pretty much completely free of pretentiousness but there is an awful lot of flesh on the menu and the place sometimes smells like fried eggs.

Anyway, its easy to get to and has breakfast until 3 so its one of my favourites for mornings after big nights (my mates tell me the eggs are pretty good, yeugh :p). Nothing super special but it doesn't have to be. I recommend the big salad (without cheese).

This place used to be really good, quite a few options on the menu could be made vegan, and most of the menu was vegetarian. The management has changed and although last time I went there (2010) they had the same menu, they are very rude and unprofessional, and had trouble differentiating between dairy-free and gluten-free, which makes me worry about what kind of mistakes they could be making.

I sadly can't reccomend it anymore, but will certainly be back if I hear the management has changed again.
