Lovely vegan cooking class experience - Edit
We really enjoyed Lua’s cooking class! Lua can adapt to any dietary requirements, and the vegan class did not at all feel like an afterthought - rather a specially. The dishes we made were unlike anything I’d ever eaten, fresh and full of flavour. Lua was an excellent teacher, and was very informative about the ingredients we were using. A really lovely experience for all dietary requirements! The apartment was very clean and had great views of the city.

Excellent cooking classes - Edit
Although i am already a vegan chef i love to learn about different cuisines that i am not that familiar with.
Read moreWhile spending the fall in Bangkok, I decided to come to Ho Chi Minh city to spend a week with Chef Lua learning about Vietnamese vegan cooking. During this week i learned many dishes that are going to become regular staples in my personal meals and some that i will share with my own clients and friends.
Lua hosts classes in her home, a very nice apartment on the 24th floor with a stunning view of the Saigon river and parts of the city.
Her classes are hands on so one is at the stove and oven and prep table doing the work, which is the best way to learn, rather than simply watching the chef do their thing.
One of her specialties is Bahn Mi and she offers these online as well as in person and i spent an evening with her, learning the intricate ways of rolling out and folding the breads. Through the week i learned many dishes with a variety of the wonderful vegetables, fruits and herbs easily found in Southeast Asia and most can be found in maor cities around the world that have Asian and Caribbean markets. A nice tour of the nearby markets is amazing, visiting tofu shops, as well as numerous small stalls selling exceptional mushrooms, herbs, vegetables, and fruits, all just delivered from nearby farms, that morning. So everything is vibrant and incredibly fresh. She approaches everything with the finest natural ingredients, not using processed ingredients from factories.
Hightlights for me were:
a soup with green banana, eggplant and tofu, flavored with her rice "sourdough" starter. Another sour soup flavored with tamarind, lime and kumquat was something i will be making often once i am back at home in California.
The Ban Xeo was the only dish i had ever made prior to these classes but now i have a deeper understanding of the dish and the freshly made coconut milk we made it with, really gave it incredible flavor. The Bahn Cuon (steamed rice noodle, stuffed) was another highlight that i look forward to practicing!
If you are in Ho Chi Minh city and love to cook, please stop at Chef Lua for a class. She also hosts an airbnb in her apartment and the room has the same incredible view of the river and city!

Great accommodating cooking course for vegans - Edit
Lua's cooking course was a great way to learn about typical cooking techniques. Even in a mixed group (vegan and meat-eater) she was able to replace/ substitute all the ingredients and provide a great experience for both. Her apartment was also great, with a nice view of the river and a friendly atmosphere.

Local wisdom and perfect banh xeo - Edit
Lua gave clear directions to her (very clean!) home kitchen and was communicative and pleasant throughout.
Read moreI enjoyed Lua’s cooking class and getting to know fellow travelers. Lua provided a local’s insights into the progression of veganism in Vietnam which I was not privy to, such as the difference of local perceptions of vegetarianism versus Buddhist veg versus modern veganism.
Lua was great at engaging everyone in the class and guiding us through food preparation. I have tried to make banh xeo (savory mung bean crepe) a couple of times before, but never knew how to get the batter to crisp evenly until I took Lua’s cooking class! Be sure to specify if you want only vegan since Lua also hosts non-vegan classes.

Great experience - Edit
Such a wonderful experience! We booked this cooking workshop with Ms. Lua not knowing what to expect. The workshop is done at her home, in a residential area of Saigon, in an apartment on the 24th floor overlooking the river. The whole experience felt very casual, like being invited to someone home, not a commercial setting at all. We were a small group of 5 guests and Lua did a wonderful job bringing everyone together, making sure everyone participated and giving the interaction a very personal feel. We cooked 3 different dishes, pretty basic yet each had a little technique or ‘secret’ that Lua shared and made it all the more memorable.
Read moreLua’s workshops are not 100% vegan, but she can accommodate a request for a strictly vegan workshop when requested, or even mixed group if you have some carni’s in your travel group. We booked our workshop for yesterday and due to some miscommunication we ended up in a mixed group which I wasn’t comfortable with. Lua was very accommodating and suggested we came back the following day for a private or semi private workshop at no additional charge. So my recommendation, communicate clearly with her, and she will accommodate almost any request. Highly recommended!

This vegan cooking class was a standout experience. We made traditional Vietnamese dishes adapted beautifully to plant-based ingredients, without ever feeling like anything was missing. The food was hearty, homey, and nourishing. The atmosphere was warm and welcoming, and Lua brought authenticity and skill to every step. Highly recommended.

She showed us how to prepare three delicious Vietnamese dishes. She gave all the instructions to prepare it also where we live with the ingredients we can find and how to choose the healthiest options. She also taught us how to do dressings with different options and she will send us all the recipes because it was a lot of ingredients 😅

Gold star cooking class! ⭐️ - Edit
I’ve done a few vegan cooking classes in Vietnam but this one by far was the best! Lua and My were so friendly and helpful. We cooked three dishes; pancakes, spring rolls and bun. Then we sat and ate what we had cooked. The star of the show really is the amazing location, with a view from the 24th floor overlooking the city and river. Lua also runs an AirBnB room from this apartment that has a beautiful room overlooking the river with a private bathroom. Highly recommend for the cost ($63AU p/p)

Fantastic and flexible cooking class - Edit
I made an appointment with Lua to take her cooking class the following day and had a wonderful time cooking up a mostly vegetarian meal. Pomelo salad, the crepes and a banana tapioca dessert with magically expanding shrimp chips for the salad. She showed and let us try different herbs and we got started on the prep for a fantastic meal. It is well worth your time and Lua is a great instructor. 5⭐️

Cooking Class at Lua‘s place - Edit
I enjoyed a really nice cooking class session at Lua‘s kitchen. I went there with my boyfriend who eats meat. Lua created a menu where we both were happy - same dishes but always with a vegetarian option (vegan also possible). Besides the delicious food Lua is a great host and I definitely would cook with her again. Thanks for the Food experience and for the recipes!

Come to a vietnamese home, learn cooking, mingle with locals, eat really well, that‘s what you get at Lua‘s place. Better book at least a day or two before, she needs to get fresh stuff from the market, which can be difficult when you wanna come the same day.

Super chef! - Edit
Lua introduced me to more home-cooked Vietnamese dishes than I can even recall. I remember vividly how patient she was with my first clumsy attempts to cook ban xeo (delicious Southern savory pancakes), how she always explained the difference between all those unknown fresh herbs she used, and, of course, eating them with friends, often seated on the floor.
Read moreLua is a gentle guide into the world of refined Vietnamese cooking, with a particular love for all vegetarian (and therefore usually vegan) delicacies and alterations of the best classical dishes this rich cuisine has to offer. When cooking with her you will not only learn about the dishes you're making, but also a great deal about her culture, and the life of young people in Vietnam.
Pros: Authentic experience, Clean and proper, Kind host
