Came for the coffee, stayed for the cat. - Edit
I love cats, so I wanted to check this place out after hearing so many great things about it on HappyCow. There was cute cat-themed wall art throughout the space, along with souvenirs made from recycled materials. I also really like that a portion of the proceeds goes toward supporting the cats.
Read moreI got to meet one of the cats, and it was incredibly sweet—very precious! We ordered the kapow on basil and a smoothie bowl. My parents enjoyed their food, though I found my kapow a little bland. The ingredients tasted fresh, high-quality, and wholesome; I just wish there had been a bit more flavor.
The kombucha was really good, and the lime juice was refreshing. We also tried the beer, which was fine, although I would have preferred it on draft.
I’d recommend coming here if you love cats and want the chance to meet a sweet one. For Western food, I think it’s a good choice, although I’ve had better Laotian food elsewhere.

Read moreJust to clarify a few things though (because we are not perfect, but we do our best and are always trying to improve so we take your feedback seriously).. our kitchen closes at 21:30. The restaurant itself at 22:00, provided that there are still people eating who ordered before 21:30. I'm not sure if there was miscommunication, or whether something else was going on. If so, please do reach out. As the owner I can't always be there in person, but it doesn't mean service should decline so I'd appreciate this clearing up.
As you may have noticed, it's the low of the low season for Luangprabang and we try to avoid food waste at all cost. Some days we barely have customers and we make a lot of things ourselves, so maybe this time something had run out and the daytime cooks will make it fresh again in the morning. You mention 'lots of things' though, could you please clarify because even though we try to avoid food waste, this sounds like we had nothing in stock. I will also ask the team what happened, as we don't want to disappoint our customers of course!

We indeed close for a few days during Lao New Year in April, to give our staff the opportunity to go back to their villages and celebrate with their families. Plus we couldn't be open as our street turns into a crazy water festival with insanely loud music and lots of drunk people 😅
And lastly to just explain why we are not a fully vegan restaurant.. there simply isn't a big enough market unfortunately. We really rely on a very very short tourism season in Luangprabang, during which we need to make the money to cover the low season. And then this low season is hitting us very hard, as it seems the lowest it's been in years, no doubt influenced by the war in the Middle East. Had we been in a big city with a regular crowd.. sure, absolutely. But to be honest it really has to do with survival more than anything. Let's hope it'll pick up again soon 🙏

Freshest food in Laos! - Edit
I ate here 3 times during my stay in Laos and from the first day I was blown away by how fresh the food tastes. After traveling for quite a while, it was a taste I haven’t had recently. The dishes I had were: basil tofu stir fry, peanut sauce bread and vegan pancakes with lime and sugar. I also tried a delicious caramel latte with oat milk.
Read moreThe basil stir fry and the peanut sauce are dishes that I feel defined my experience at The Happy Cat. The flavours were not loud, but rather very subtle and soft. Every bit was delicious, and I loved it, but it was different than most food I’ve had in Laos. With these two dishes, I will admit that my body felt great afterwards, it felt very healthy and fresh.
The pancake with lime was great option too, the pancake was European rather than American (which I loved) and combining it with lime is unexpectedly good (will try at home!)
But the best thing about this place is the staff. Everyone was so kind, service was outstanding and done with a smile. I truly felt everyone was happy working there. The owners is also very friendly and the place is run very well.
I love their mission to help cats in Luang Prabang. The place is clearly more expensive than other restaurants, but I have all the faith that the money goes to the right causes: local cats and the wonderful young staff. Must visit!

I had khao soi (Lao style) and vegan Pho, both very tasty! Drinks were amazing as well. I loved it there. Nice outside sitting (inside is also possible) in a lively but still quiet part of town.

We loved it here. Went twice. Vegan pancakes (crepes really) tasted like I had them as a kid. Coconut iced americano delicious. Lots to choose from here. And cats visit! Perfection.

The food was very tasty and it came in big portions. They are environmentally friendly which is amazing, fight for animal cause and seem to share the daily income with all staff (as it says on the menu).

Lots of vegan dishes with a "side order" of cat - Edit
Although the cat(s) come and go as they please, they may honor you with a brief walk by. But no worries, the food is delicious. We had the vegan pad Thai and pho'real noodle soup with veggies, both excellent. And then we had the vegan chocolate and banana crepe (make sure you ask them for the vegan version), also great.

Yesterday I tried the Kapow! dish. Stir-fried basil leaves with tofu, mushrooms and veggies. Comes with wholegrain rice. Had the Lao spicy variant which was exactly my taste. Very delicious!

During our 3 day stay in Luang Prabang we eat here everyday. Staff is super nice. Nice cozy atmosphere and all dishes are vegan, but you can add egg and for breakfast they offer egg and cheese. Loved the shots and the locally brewed kombucha.
