They gave us pork… - Edit
Before I tell about how we were given pork… if that didn’t happen, I’d give it a 2/5 stars. It was pretty bland and not healthy (although it’s not trying to be). Filled us up but not in a nice way and it was cheap but for what it actually was, didn’t feel it was that cheap.
Read moreI have basic Spanish and told the server that we were vegan and don’t eat meat or cheese, he understood and even repeated it back. I ordered the vegan toppings (beans, garlic, spinach, cilantro) and when ordering my partners, I said, in Spanish the same for her plus jalapeños.
When the food arrived, they were a bit confused and even asked the waiter again who got what. My partner after two or three bites could tell something was not right. We looked and they added pork bits. I was pretty annoyed cause there was never this word spoken in Spanish and he knew we were vegan. Maybe there was some mix up with the ladies cooking… anyway that experience is obviously not a good one for us.
Maybe if you spoke good Spanish you might be fine but I’d be careful. There are other places in Xela to check out and go first that cater better for vegans!

Wow - Edit
Pupusas here are incredible - got some with all the vegan filling options (beans, cilantro, jalapeño, spinach and garlic). They were HUGE and really good value. You can serve yourself as much cabbage and tomato sauce as you like. The waiter was really helpful and double checked about all the ingredients.

Good typical food - Edit
They have nothing vegan on the menu, but we asked and they were super helpful with getting a vegan pupusa. I have to say they were super delicious. Cale salad and salsa en masse!

Cheroism - tasty, filling and very local - Edit
It's easy to make this traditional dish vegan here, we had a mix of garlic spinach and refried beans. It comes with bottomless tomato salsa and vegetable slaw topping. Cheap, tasty and filling.
