Li Wan That Got Away

Though there may have been a de facto end to recent regional strife, the spectre of its sorry legacy still lingers on in portions of the city’s hospitality sector, and nowhere is this more evident than in the hotels and, more specifically, their buffet restaurants.
There are, of course, exceptions; a selection of venues have made a roaring return without missing a beat. However, others have taken a different tact. Some have opted for a temporary (I hope) hiatus, while a good proportion have decided to operate in a slightly diluted capacity: fewer staff and less diversity of dishes. Given the sheer scale of the dining space here and the forlorn, barren stations idling off to the side, it was instantly apparent that they had chosen the latter.
On realising this fact, my mind instantly began to whirr with thoughts of what this place would be like in its full pomp. A sentiment that was further compounded when I began to taste what was on offer. Without exception, the calibre of each dish was undeniably excellent. Impressive foul, fragrant burnt garlic rice, and incredibly moreish vegetable puffs all demonstrated this perfectly. Even the couscous was worthy of note, and in lieu of baked beans there was a rather charming white bean cassoulet – a true Dubai glow-up if ever I did see one. The only aspect that really irked me was the fact that hash browns were out of bounds due to dairy content. This wouldn’t have been such an issue with a more comprehensive spread, and the worst part is that they looked incredible.
Clearly, based on the quality of what I sampled, this is a place laden with potential. In its current guise, I would find it difficult to throw my full endorsement behind it, but I’m willing to bide my time and return to get the full experience.
