Cozy Atmosphere; Fantastic Taste

March 22nd, 2018 was this unique gem of a vegan restaurant’s last day of business. The owner and sole operator of the restaurant explained to me, when I ate there for the final time a few days before the closure, that she had simply become overwhelmed with her triple work focuses of operating the restaurant, supplying various locations with her vegan pastries, and catering for private parties. (She does everything herself so not difficult to understand!)
She said, as I recall, that she would be taking a one or two month break, then possibly continue with making vegan pastries which will be order-able online. And I believe she said she may operate a small coffee shop sometimes at the site where she makes the pastries.

For direct information, she said, you can follow Little Saebejae’s Facebook page.

[My original review is below.]
Cozy, relaxing atmosphere and with every dish of the lunch set delicious, with subtle, unique tastes abounding. One of my favorite vegan restaurants in Tokyo.

We wish we could have tried the food...

We went on a Thursday at lunchtime, excited to try the food here. We tried to enter the restaurant but a waitress (very nicely) told us that the place was full. We said we would wait, but she said that it would be a very long wait. We asked if anything was available for takeout, and she said no. It felt like she wanted us to leave. Seems like a weird way to treat customers that want to support your business.

Delicious food great atmosphere

Our last day in Tokyo we found this small lovely place a few streets away from the tourist hustle. My gf had a delicious lunch, plate banana naan with a mild curry, small salad and a homemade samosa. I had the day plate Japanese style which included a really nice soup, small salad, rice and grilled veggies. Dessert was also included: a really tasty oil free mini muffin. Try one and buy some to take out, so good for on the road after visiting the temple. The owner is such a sweet woman, grateful and loves her job. When back in Tokyo would love to visit again.

Pros: Good food!, Atmosphere , Friendly staff

Cons: none

Beautiful, cosy & homey

The owner is an absolute gem, like having lunch in her home. She makes you feel so welcomed and the meals include tea and desert. The curry was delicious and the Banana naan was fantastic! Would recommend! As well as her homemade muffins... love!

Pros: Cosy, Affordable, Delicious

Japanese style vegan food

Restaurant is run by a lovely lady. 1500 yen for the lunch chefs plate was a good deal - came with soup, rice, veggies, tofu and a dessert.

Food is a bit bland compared to what I'm used to and the vegan pound cake was a bit too sweet hard.

Amazing find

I loved this cafe! The atmosphere is super cosy, the Japanese owner is friendly & sweet. The food is delicious! I had the veg curry with naan and was pleasantly surprised! I also got a banana muffin to go for later in the day. Too bad I tried it on my last day... If not, I would have been back for more.

Favorite Spot in Tokyo

My goodness this restaurant is a little gem in Asakusa! The staff are so helpful and very, very kind. I told them I was headed home on a eight hour flight and they gave me a brownie and tea as a parting gift (no charge)! The food was absolutely amazing (try the curry—banana naan—yum!). They do require you to purchase a tea or coffee (I believe they also serve pomegranate juice) but I found it worth it because you don’t want to rush your meal. The atmosphere is very European but with small charms like the flowers and decorations it feels very cozy. The menu price is high but honestly I was okay with it because of the kindness of the staff and the [seriously] delicious food. Don’t miss this spot if you’re staying in Asakusa...or anywhere in Tokyo.

Pros: Kind and friendly staff, AMAZING food, Cozy atmosphere

Cons: Kind of pricey?

Lovely and rewarding

Walking the little street to this place will provide some welcome respite from the crassness in the temple/market area.
The owner has created a great space. The menu offered two options - a baked tofu thing, and a curry (Indian style based on a tomato gravy, not Japan style curry). Both come as a set including mixed rice, a soup, and salad veggies. As an option you can include a gluten-free, oil-free muffin. It's all vegan, tasty, healthy and good value. The muffin blew my mind. The muffin was served with a soy cream, slightly sweet, light and, well, creamy I guess.
Go for a coffee and muffin if you don't want a meal.

Pros: healthy, vegan, delicious

Cons: no cons

Cute café

Cute little wooden café, it was a bit hard to find since there was no sign in front (except one that said cute muffin).
There only was the curry option available without reservation which was still delicious and filling. The chef was very nice, too!

Pros: Small tea, water and a date as dessert included

Cons: Reservation needed for special plates More expensi

Low-key and friendly

A welcome retreat from the non-stop energy of Asakusa.

We were immediately greeted by a very friendly staff member upon entering the small cafe. Conversation was easy, as she knew enough English to hold good small-talk. This made ordering effortless as well. There is an English menu, and much of the information around the cafe was in both English and Japanese.

The dinner menu is small, as this is essentially a cafe, but there are also a number of confections available. There is a set meal that you must make a reservation for. We didn't know this ahead of time, so we ordered the veggie curry with banana naan. This was one of a couple options available if you did not make a reservation. It came with a small side salad, topped with a delicious dressing, and a small couscous dish. The curry was mild and delicious. Throughout the meal we were treated to complimentary lotus leaf tea. In the end, we couldn't resist trying the specialty muffins as well. We asked for a recommendation and settled on the banana nut flavor. The deserts are almost half price if you eat them in house, and as an added bonus, our waitress took them in back to warm them and add mounds of whipped cream and mint leaves on top. They were magnificent!

The atmosphere in the cafe was very relaxed. Plenty of greenery, both real and faux, soften the edges of the small space. The lighting was low, and we listened to smooth jazz throughout our meal.

The price was reasonable, especially for downtown Tokyo, and we were given a couple of complimentary tea bags as we were leaving.

Highly recommended if you're in the area!

Finally, vegetables!

We found this place just around the corner from our hostel and what a great surprise! After feeling a little undernourished and beginning to forget what a vegetable looked like, Little Saebejae provided a vegan sanctuary. We both had a veggie curry which came with 2 side dishes and a super tasty banana naan bread. The flavours were amazing and it was great to have something healthy yet comforting. The visit got even better when the lovely owner brought out some free mini matcha muffins that came with the best cream/icing I have ever eaten! This place should not be missed if you're in the asakusa area (although it's equally worth making a trip to!)

Pros: Great price , Best muffins ever, Lovely owner

It's all true

Café Little Saebejae, Asakusa, Tokyo 16/5/2017
All I read about Little Saebejae was true. A little hard to find because there isn’t a large sign on the front window saying it is restaurant. Instead, there was a sign saying Cute Muffin and another with the words written very small saying Café Little Saebejae. But it is definitely in the right place at Asakusa 1-8-11 (that means Asakusa city, Superblock 1, Block 8, No. 11. The number 8-11 is on the gate of a narrow dwelling right next door and next to that is Kanji House. This is all within 100m of the Asakusa Elementary School. The host was as lovely as others have said and the food was equally as good. We were provided a thin soup, rice, macaroni salad, salad and a hot dish of tofu, broccoli and mustard seeds. It was very good. The café is wonderfully tranquil and the host is very friendly. Highly recommended. But be aware that the restaurant closes when the food runs out so either get there early or call ahead.

Pros: lovely food, lovely owner, lovely ambience

Cons: name of cafe is not well shown

Best in Town

Little Saebejae is my most favorite vegan restaurant on this planet. The food is always to the highest quality. Little Saebejae is what I miss most about not being in Tokyo!

The food is always delicious (my favorite is the curry with banana naan bread) and the menu changes every day. So it is always very exciting because it doesn't matter what is severed, it all is amazing and prepared with a lot of love.

I also love the muffin and the brownies. Perfect treats!

And it also is the best food in Tokyo and the most affordable vegan food there too. A true blessing and gem in this world!

Pros: Owner is amazing, atmosphere, filling, healthy, cheap

Cons: Nothing, its a perfect place!

Very nice food for a very nice price

Small cosy restaurant, owned by a very nice lady who cooks the food herself. It's only 3-4 minutes away from senso-ji and nakamise-dori : far enough to get away from the crowd and the tourist restaurants. There is only one plate on the menu, different every day, which is very reassuring regarding the freshness of the food and the fact that everything is cooked there. The day I ate there, we were served a japanese-style meal with several different plates (matcha flavored soba, a very tasty plate of rice and a mixed salad). The owner speaks little english (but enough to ensure you a good moment), and is very, very friendly : she offered us a delicious desert (gluten-free brownie and cherry cake with soja whipped cream), and some cookies to go with the coffee ! At just 1000 yens for the main course, this is a definite bargain !

Pros: Very nice owner, Cheap and delicious food

Cons: very expensive coffee (500 yens...)

Perfect!

We went for lunch to this adorable little vegan cafe which offered a set meal for about $10 USD and it came with soup, rice, veggies, small salad, which were filling, healthy, and so delicious. We were surprised that the meal even included a little dessert that was also so tasty! My sister (vegetarian) also really enjoyed the meal. It was such a great find, and the decor was lovely, not to mention the sweet owner who even gave us some tea bags on the way out! There was also a variety of homemade vegan treats (a little pricey compared to the meal) that were also available for purchase, so I splurged and bought a mango bagel along with a banana muffin- both SO GOOD! This is a gem in Tokyo, definitely recommend it!

Pros: Beautiful Atmosphere, Good Value/Taste/Portion, Staff Kind

Cons: none

Amazing food and experience

The owner is a real sweetheart. We were her only guests at the time we stumbled in and she was so nice. She greeted us with warm camomile tea and offered us menu. We tried both foods on the menu that day - Indian style chickpeas with pita, salad and spinach and Korean style noodles with lots of vegetables, chili + soup. Everything was absolutely excellent. We got a desert consisting of pumpkin bread with marmelade and muffin with whipped cream. Delicious too! We highly recommend this place.

Pros: deliscious food, nice owner, warm, cosy atmosphere

Mind the Frying Pan

Nice, cosy little vegetarian - maybe vegan - restaurant. There is one menu and it was good. Mind the frying pan outside. The owner did not put it outside, so there was no name. More people where guessing weather this was Little Saebejae.

Pros: vegan, cosy, nice owner

Amazing hospitality and food!

I wish I knew about this place earlier, but am glad I atleast know about it now.
Being vegetarian is super difficult here but places like these make life much better!
I was warmly greeted by the owner as soon as I entered and a cup of tea was promptly served which I welcomed given the cold weather.
I waited a couple of minutes and I was served a nice plate of food that included Pita, Olive Focaccia, Soup, Salad, Vegtable side dish and a wonderful dessert! The soup was excellent and I loved other things as well but the soup won my heart. The Olive Focaccia was so good and complimented the soup very well.
I decided to take out some Muffins and they were really nice!
Over all I loved this place and would surely go back as the menu changes periodically.
The decor is great and relaxing!

Pros: Excellent service , Excellent food , Great Price
