Lebe Gesund

Rothenburg is a very nice spot, with a lot of history, nature.. but as a vegan you could get desperate. Everywhere you only find meat and very poor side dishes. "Lebe Gesund" is the only "happy isle" there! Everything is vegan and organic. They grow their own vegetables, corn and fruits, completely vegan (even without dung). With those ingredients they make delicious bread, juices, cookies, spreads.. they also sell some few fresh fruits and vegetables.

Everything is vegan and organic except for some honey jars that the owner explained were from here family's hives. The owner is very kind and friendly and gave us many samples. We ended up buying everything we tasted. The gingerbread, fruitcake, various crackers, and cookies have filled one of our backpacks. There were also large bags of dried apple slices that we ran out of room for. The small store is within the old town limits and definitely worth patronizing. For dinner the owner referred us to one of the Italian restaurants in town, which was easily able to accommodate a vegan request.

We can't emphasise enough how happy we were to find this place. Rothenburg ob de Tauber is a really tourist-y spot, and so the food is pretty average at best - luckily we came across Lebe Gesund on our first day in the town!

The shop is 100% vegan (apart from a few jars of honey), and is located right near the main square of this beautiful medieval town. They also have an outdoor market stall on Saturdays during the summer.

All of the products are organically grown, and come from a family farm and orchid nearby. We were told by the friendly shopkeeper that the profits from the shop are invested back into buying land for their animal sanctuary.

Everything in this store is DELICIOUS (plus there are so many samples to try while you're in there!). Some highlights are the apple chips, the whole range of vegan spreads and dips (Wild garlic, aubergine), and the amazing vegan cookies.

The shop also sells its own homemade vegan breads and a few organic veges from their farm. We highly recommend grabbing some of their fresh bread, cucumber and dips, and heading out for your own picnic on the old town wall.
