Confusing menu, language challenge led to disappointing meal

I went after seeing a review here about the sweet and sour tofu, which I had had a craving for. When I looked at their multi-page menu, I saw the sweet and sour listing, but also say an area that said 'fried vegetable meat'. I assumed that meant they had mock meats. When I made my order, I said I wanted the sweet and sour, but instead of the tofu, I wanted the vegetarian beef. I also ordered a side of morning glory.

When my sweet and sour plate came, it had no vegetarian beef in it. The waitress told me she understood I wanted a separate plate and when the 'vegetarian beef' came, it was cow beef cooked with vegetables, which of course I would not eat. I explained to the waitress that the menu was confusing and she understood. Then they brought me TWO more plates - one again with cow beef and one without. I couldn't believe it.

As a solution, I suggested adding tofu to vegetable-only dish, rather than throwing it out, because at this point I felt bad for them. When it came back with tofu, the tofu was mediocre because they had clearly just fried it up in oil and added to the vegetable plate, and it didn't have an appealing taste. I ate a little of it, and decided I didn't want to force myself to eat more, having already had the morning glory (which was good, but came with too many spicy peppers which I didn't eat) and the sweet and sour vegetable plate.

I paid 200 Kip for three plates worth plus my drink, and clarified that their menu should say "fried vegetables WITH meat", and that would make things clearer. They were very polite and accommodating and I apologized for not speaking Lao and also took partial responsibility.

The lesson here is - they do NOT have mock meats, only tofu. And maybe the tofu would have tasted better if it was prepared as part of the meal, rather than after. Some of the other reviews here suggest maybe that is the case.

Big portion but not that great

Smoothies have milk in them, but you can get without. The stir fried yellow noodles were not the best sadly.

Many options

Great portions and prices! Almost every dish is available with tofu. I especially loved the curry rice, very tasty and a great amount for only 30k kip!

Pros: Tofu options, Quantity , Prices

Lots of options..

Lots of vegetarian and a fair amount of vegan options.
Not mind blowing in flavour but I liked it!
Nice owners and big portions.
Service a little slower but that’s Laos.

Nice enough food, lots of options

Food was nothing special, but it was tasty enough and reasonably priced. Lots of veg options and the portions were really big. The mango smoothie was gigantic! Would come back again for the number of options available.

Nice place, huge portions!

They have lots of different vegan options, with tofu. You get some free fruit before your meal. I ordered a banana shake with no milk (no idea if they usually do it with) and it was huge, as well as the instant noodle soup with tofu which I couldn't finish because it was just too much. The taste is quite nice, nothing very special but I liked it nonetheless!

Pros: Many options, Tofu

Cons: Service was a little bit slow, Very big portions

Not great

We didn’t really enjoy our food here, we ordered pad Thai and yellow noodle and they were both pretty much identical and very mushy and tasted bad, I also ordered a pineapple shake which should be just pineapple and ice and I’m pretty sure it had milk in, either way it wasn’t good at all!

Loads of options

There's a good variety for vegans! Vegetable and tofu options with everything! They also understand "no egg". Prices are cheap and they give you a mountain of rice and a nice little free fruit platter with your meal.

Value for money, but maybe tricky for vegans

The fruit shakes are huge and mostly priced at a bargain 5k, plus they give you a complimentary plate of fruit while you wait for your meals. And on both visits the bill somehow came to less than we had totalled ourselves??
They’re not that careful when taking the orders though so if you request changes to veganize a dish it might not happen. Eg. my bf ordered the tofu burger and asked for no cheese or mayonnaise, but realised halfway through eating it that there actually was cheese melted onto the bun. I had ordered a tofu veg stir fry and asked for no fish sauce and it seemed fine, but after his order was messed up I can’t be 100% sure. The stir fry was really tasty though and a huge portion.
On the second visit we had salad baguettes and asked for only veggies - no cheese - and this time it was all good.

Pros: cheap, huge portions, nice fruit shakes

Cons: ordering vegan can be a bit of a gamble

Food is great, staff very unfriendly

Food is amazing, big portions, affordable prices. You get a free fruit salad with every meal. The staff is very unfriendly, doesn't smile at all, gives you the menu without looking at you.

Good for the price

I'd give this restaurant 3,5 stars tastewise. The food is good, but nothing special, really.

We had the fried noodles with vegetables, noodle soup & fresh springrolls. They do give you a plate full of fresh herbs, so you can season the dish according to your tastebuds.

They gave us a small fruit salad as an appetizer, which was nice!

Pros: Cheap, Good portion size, Free fruit (+ herbs)

Cons: Staff does not speak English at all

Good food, good price

Had some very good curries here for a good price (although the green curry was a bit too sweet for me). We even got a free fruit salad (watermelon & pineapple) but that was not so good tbh, oh well it was free.

Yum!

Great! Servers speak enough english to understand "no egg" and "no cheese". Food is super delicious. Dont order the noodle soup because the broth is the same broth for the meat eaters. But the stir fried noodles with tofu and vegetables was awesome!

Pros: Cheap, Wifi, Plenty of vegan and vegetarian options

Well-priced veg options

*NOTE that staff (at least our server) isn’t familiar with the term “vegan”. They said the yellow noodles weren't made with egg and we asked for no fish sauce, which went over fine, but still a little dubious.

Are here twice; first time I had the sweet and sour vegetables, which were plenty tasty. Partner had the noodles which were interestingly kinda sweet; it was good but might not suit all tastes. Both were fair helpings considering the prices.

Second go I had the above noodles with tofu; only when eating s full portion did I notice it kinda tastes like those instant noodle side dish packs from North America. Partner had yellow noodle veg soup which came with a big plate of fresh greens. She liked it.

This is a cheap option in a town with very few which is why we went back; hopefully it’s actually vegan...a side note: despite what the menu says, noodle dishes do not come with steamed rice! A serving is an extra 5k
