Plantbased cuisine done right - Edit
We went to the opening day and are excited about this latest addition to Vienna's vegan culinary landscape.
Read moreUnsurprisingly, lara reminds me a lot of its sister restaurant jola. Located in the very next street, it has the same namegiving pair (Jonathan & Larissa) behind the concept. The most obvious difference being that while jola is a carte blanche fine dining experience, lara is more of a fine casual restaurant featuring a dedicated menu, at a more affordable pricepoint.
However, that does not mean that the dishes lack the love & creativity that make a visit at jola's exceptional. Sampling as much as we could on our first evening, we were continuously astonished by the delightful creations on offer. If you appreciate plantbased cuisine that is delicious, creative and goes beyond the usual vegan reconstruction of traditional animal-product dishes, this is the place to be.

Emotional taste experience - Edit
Very nice tastful experience, people very kind and nice, nice and quiet ambient. The flavors and tastes are sometimes creating sensorial emotions. A lot of care in dishes preparation.

Tasty brunch options - Edit
Brunch was a great experience with a small, tempting menu of sweet and savoury dishes. We ordered four dishes in total and shared them. We definitely had room for more food, but we wanted to visit a few more eateries that day, so we left it at that.
Read moreWe had a brioche oyster mushroom sandwich, which was a bit underwhelming. The bread was nice and fluffy, but maybe needed a bit more toasting to hold up to the filling, the sandwich was lacking a little structural integrity. The mushrooms were nice, though there was one big clump that were too big to bite through. There was too much lettuce for my personal taste. The dressing provided a nice citrus flavour, but otherwise there was not a lot of flavour.
Fortunately, everything else was a hit, starting with the sensational glazed crispy fried mushrooms. They had a nice light coating which stayed really crispy despite the sticky sauce. The flavour was a good combination of sweet and spicy, and the accompanying chilli mayo was creamy and tasty. This dish was perfect in terms of both taste and texture, and was probably our favourite dish we had in Vienna.
On to the sweets. We rarely turn down an opportunity for something pandan flavoured, so of course we chose the coconut pandan brioche. The creams could have been a little sweeter, as there was a hint of bitterness to the bread at the crust, but otherwise it was fluffy and well balanced, with both flavours shining through.
And finally, the caramelized French toast was delicious! The bread was so soft and fluffy, and nicely sweetened (though we thought it could have stood a bit more caramelization and colouring). The vanilla cream was so light, it was a dream.

I was brought to your table and given the menus. After a while the waitress asked if I needed recommendations and she tried to explain the non alcoholic drinks very well. She let me try three different options! I went with a rather bittersweet mocktail.
The food will be explained as well. Usually people would go with a medium and a big dish or two mediums and a mini. Dessert is common too. I chose the first option.
The "potato foam" was heavenly. Sooo cheesy, paired with asparagus, fresh spinach and radishes. Topped with airy potato crisp. Wow wow wow.
As the medium dish was on the larger side, the big ravioli was rather small. But the taste did not disappoint! The aspargus must've been pickled and the oil matched perfectly.
Dessert is a must, especially this one. Typical austrian dumpling with a hot rhubarb filling, surrounded by a cold rhubarb filling and sweet crumbs as well as the best and most refreshing vanilla ice cream you'll ever have.
Every component was everything you could dream of, the service top notch. Of course the prices are high but I'm sure you'd be aware before you book a table. The service was excellently in time too, I guess with company the courses would take longer but I was served in an adequate speed alone.

Creative menu - Edit
At dinner we were recommended to order 3-4 plates per person, which sounded like too many but seemed accurate. The menu is divided into mini, small, and big dishes, and the big plates are really not big. On the one hand, it means you get to try lots of dishes. On the other, the cost adds up quickly! We shared all the dishes we ordered.
Read moreThe glazed focaccia and white bean dip (from the 'mini' section of the menu) was the highlight. The bread was a really tall and airy bake with a good crust. It had a sticky, slightly sweet glaze and was served with a white bean dip that was the perfect accompaniment.
Also from the 'mini' section, we tried the smoked croquettes yuzukoshō. They were filled with smoked potato and tiny chunks of smoked tofu. The coating was wonderfully crisp. There was a small amount of yuzu paste on top, which was tasty. This was really good.
From the 'small' section of the menu, we got the brioche and faux gras. Once again, the bread was pillowy soft. The paté was thick and you could tell it was made of mushrooms, but the flavour was a bit too mild. Maybe it's accurate for fois gras though?
We shared a potato rösti cucumber dill (also 'small'). It was already halved, convenient for sharing between two. The texture was spot on, crispy on the outside with fluffy potato inside. The cucumber and yoghurt added some nice flavours and textures, and the salad was fine too.
Moving on to the 'big' plates, we got the ravioles de dauphiné smoked potato, and were disappointed to see that it was very small. The pasta was a bit too thick, considering the daintiness of the overall dish. The smoky potato filling was the same as in the croquettes, so it was tasty, but the pasta parcels were so small that there just wasn't much of it in there. The dish was covered in horseradish foam. The dish was just ok for me because of that (I'm not a fan), but horseradish fans will enjoy it.
Our final dish was the tortilla mushroom shawarma salsa verde. This was really tasty. The bread was soft and lovely. The salad and salsa verde had lots of fresh herbs that brought some lovely flavour and freshness. The mushrooms were really soft, juicy, and flavoursome, with a meaty texture. This felt much more substantial than the ravioli.
Despite a few quibbles, I feel it is worth a visit, if you've got the money for a slightly higher end experience.

Gourmet Dining Experience - Edit
A beautiful restaurant in the heart of Vienna. The menu had a good variety of choices and everything we tried was absolutely delicious. I do wish the portion sizes were larger, especially for the ‘large’ plates. One beautiful ravioli is not filling enough for two people and the price(s) were quite high for the portion sizes. It is still very much worth it for the dining experience. We shared 4 dishes and ordered a fifth as we were still a bit hungry. Everything was so delicious!

Perfect place for a special occasion - Edit
We came here on a special occasion and were really pleasently surprised by the whole experience. The food was super delicious and really well presented, everything tasted well balanced with lots of interesting flavors. The staff was also nice (especially the person at the bar) and the interior was nicely designed. The dinner is not exactly cheap (we paid about 50€ per person), but i think it's still well worth a visit, to experience really delicious vegan food!

great brunch - Edit
definitely a once in a while treat as pricey but soooo good! The staff/owners are extremely attentive, kind and professional. We were regularly checked on, refilled water and explained the food. The cocos yoghurt that was paired with the granola was sooo delicious, the mushrooms on the breakfast tacos were extremely well done and so was the french toast. The brioche wouldn't be my choice again for breakfast as its rather heavy and includes a peanut dip which just isn't my taste, but the aubergine on it was so well done too. Really amazing food and worth every penny! Also, amazing coffee and I loved the thai tea latte.

Great - Edit
We were there for lunch, but unfortunately there was only one dish and one dessert available, the dish of the week. We were told that they were still in the soft launch phase and that more dishes would follow. We really enjoyed the food, and the new restaurant is a great success. We will definitely be back for dinner.

Thank you for taking the time to review our restaurant. It's okay if it's too expensive for you or if you did not like the taste of the dishes you had ordered - it's impossible to make everyone happy, however, we pay our employees a good salary, there is no unpaid overtime, we buy only the best ingredients, and the restaurant's happen to be in the first district and just got renovated; these costs all add up, where it is not possible to charge less and still keep the business running. I know I shouldn't take this personal, but as this is my restaurant I sadly do so and it's very frustrating when guests make comments about prices when they have no insight in our cost structure. I hope you try it another time or come to our brunch and maybe you then see all the love, quality and time that goes into our dishes & service. Take care (:
