Okay

I enjoyed the variety of vegetable rolls but I was ill after eating there. Not sure if it was cross contamination or there was dairy in something. Be wary and maybe ask what the ingredients are.

Pros: Variety of menu, Customer service , Taste

Authentic Japanese Restaurant

I knew almost as soon as I walked in that Kyoko's is an authentic Japanese restaurant. The compact and elegant way the napkin was placed under the plate, the little soy sauce plates with the understated cherry blossom design, and the samurai decorations on the wall all reflected a very Japanese taste. The chef, who is also the owner, is indeed Japanese. The food may be a little bland, but that's because good, traditional Japanese food tends to be bland. Japanese people believe that foods that are strongly spiced are unsophisticated, and that subtler foods that maintain the taste of the original ingredients are more refined. It's the opposite of European food, which gets further and further from the taste of the original ingredients the more expensive and sophisticated the restaurant.

We had the seaweed salad, followed by a selection of sushi rolls: avocado roll, kappa maki, oshinko roll, kampyo roll, and tofu skin roll. I don't like sweetness in foods that are not meant to be eaten as dessert, so I didn't like the kampyo and tofu skin rolls, which were way too sweet. Even the oshinko roll, which was only slightly sweet, was too sweet for me. But I really liked the avocado roll and the kappa maki.

The server checked and confirmed that the miso soup is made with fish broth. That was a little disappointing, though not surprising.

Despite these complaints, I'm still giving this restaurant four stars because it's great to be able to eat vegan at an authentic Japanese restaurant in the U.S. I respect the way the chef, while accommodating vegans, provides a truly Japanese experience, without pandering to the Western palate.

It’s ok

I’ve had the avocado and cucumber roll. They seem to have a number of good options but I wish it was clear what is vegan.

Lots of sushi options

This place should be rated 3 to 3.5 stars, but I gave it 4 because they deserve extra credit for providing so many options. I am a stickler for good sushi and it's hard to find. Given we are in Central New York, I relaxed my standards.

They have the typical Avocado Roll, Kappa Maki, etc., but they also have several more inventive vegetarian and vegan sushi rolls. We ordered the Midori (asparagus, seaweed, mango, avocado), the Zen (fried tofu, avocado, sweet potato), and Zesty Avocado. We also ordered edamame and hijiki salad as appetizers, and the Tofu Teriyaki and Veg Tempura for entrees.

Everything was good, not great. Taste was leaning towards bland. However, because they have so many other options, we are willing to go back and try again. In term of understanding vegan options, our server was not knowledgeable on the ingredients but she was helpful. Because we are in the middle of the coronavirus, I would ask ask ask on your next visit.

Pros: Good value, Lots of options
