Mixed experience

This restaurant came highly recommended both here on Happy Cow and by friends, so I was gonna go here one way or another before I leave Taichung. It’s a very popular destination for foodies, families and, of course, veggies/vegans. They don’t accept reservations, but they run a smooth operation that minimizes wait times. We, a party of three, arrived about a half hour after they opened and waited around 40 minutes to be seated. The waiting area is outside and partially shaded. There’s no protection from rain.

Once seated, you scan a QR code to order, and the menu is available in both English and Chinese. I failed to notice whether the menu distinguishes between veggie and vegan dishes. I immediately selected the stewed stink tofu (medium spicy) and the dumplings in chili oil.my friends selected the tomato noodle soup, sesame noodles, and a few side dishes. There’s a selection of beverages (at least one uses honey), but they also provide complimentary self-service teas. There was an iced brown rice tea and a hot black bean tea.

Once we placed our order, the food started arriving quickly. The stinky tofu was the highlight, and the medium spicy was the spiciest I’ve had in Taiwan (not too spicy for me). Nothing else impressed me, and the dumplings downright disappointed me. They didn’t taste like any other version that I had had before. I think they might have used the five spice mix. Whatever flavoring they used surprised me in a bad way. The dumplings were also stuck together and impossible to separate without tearing them apart.

Kong Ye is located a bit far from where I’m staying. A friend drove us there, so transportation wasn’t an issue. That said, I wouldn’t go through the effort to return there on my own. I would say it’s a solid option for vegan diners. Skip the dumplings and explore other options on the menu.

Rich flavourful ramen

The food here was exceptional. Bursting with flavour, the spicy miso broth was perfect. The crispy enoki mushroom was an amazing ramen topping. Ordering was a little difficult, it was supposed to be through a QR code which I couldn’t get to work. Staff were super friendly and helped with my language barrier to get the food ordered.

High quality food for cheap prices

The place looks a bit fancy, but the prices are very low.
I had spicy noodles, deep fried king oyster mushrooms, and steamed dumplings and paid 250 TWD

Great atmosphere

The restaurant is very spacious and relaxing. The stinky tofu is a must, as well as several small dishes. Plenty of paid parking nearby.

Great Taiwanese vegetarian

If you’re in the mood for Taiwanese vegetarian food, you can’t go wrong. Nice atmosphere, very clean, professional service. It has been pretty busy every time I’ve been here but the food was still out quickly. Stinky tofu and dumplings were awesome.

Excellent and tasty food

A very satisfying meal with affordable prices. I especially enjoyed the Spicy Stinky Tofu hotpot, noodle soups, Taiwanese salty rice cake and dumpling appetizers. Also the fried lotus seeds was unique and refreshing option in the fried food section. I highly recommend this restaurant and would return often. It’s mostly vegan with only a few dishes with egg. Be sure to ask to avoid it.
