Not what it used to be

Before going vegan I used to rave about Koh Thai; not sure what’s happened but something has changed. We had a family meal here recently and the cocktails and starters were good, my pad Thai however was a huge disappointment and I ended up leaving most of it.

There was a lot of oil used and the sauce left a funny taste. Maybe I just had a bad one of experience.

Disappointing food & service

I used to love coming to Koh Thai but last night the whole experience was a disappointment. They’ve changed the table layout making it less cosy. We waited around 15/20 minutes for our drinks and the same for getting the bill. The spring rolls were ok but the other starters and mains were actually unpleasant to eat with the tofu almost tasting off. We left most of it and explained this to staff but they just said sorry and took it away. Maybe it was a one off but with so many issues, I wouldn’t return.

Pros: Clearly marked vegan options, Good cocktails

Cons: Vegan options didn’t taste nice , Lost its intimate atmosphere

Fresh and tasty Thai

First up it's great that Koh Thai marks vegan options as this can sometimes be unclear with Thai cuisine. The aubergine red curry sauce was watery in texture but no less delicious for it. The aubergine tempura was delivered separately for maximum crispiness. Som tam salad was fresh and crunchy (loving the raw green beans) with a citrus tang. Satay jay (4 skewers) had a meaty bite to the tofu and a delicious charred finish. Pineapple riceberry rice was an original dish, its saltiness balanced against pineapple sweetness, with a generous amount of cashews. Bangkok broccoli tasted more of soy sauce and sesame than of peanut. Nothing described as hot (e.g. salad, curry) was too fiery. There was consistent quality, freshness and contrast in this meal so a safe bet whatever you choose!
