Wonderful all-vegan place!

Walking in for the first time is a treat for the eyes. There is a full old-school bar, which is not so out of place in the 'hood, but the place is full of plants and wonderfully strange items, such as a unicorn, board games, a mannequin with a gasmask, and pinball games (which are totally free to play). Way funky all around. There was death metal playing the whole time that a friend and I ate half of a 16" Plant Lovers deep-dish pizza, which was divine (!) and took us an hour to get through, and there was no way to eat another bite. So, we got a box to take the other half of the pizza home. The way friendly person behind the bar told us that they make their own vegan cheese daily, and they make all of the desserts, including the Chocolate Cheesecake, which I bought to take home. This place is now a favorite. Highly recommend! I'll definitely eat here again next time I'm in Chicago.

Pros: Great vegan cheese pizza, Way funky bizarre cool wonderful decor, Friendly staff

Excellent pizza

This is the best vegan pizza I've had (so far). The popcorn tofu and desserts are good too.

Pros: Great food

Cons: Pricy, Small interior

Disappointed

I went to Kitchen 17 with high hopes, but was let down. It seems to be mostly a bar/venue with vegan food, weird dim lights and a funky atmosphere. Unfortunately I found the food fairly bland and unimpressive.

I ordered the traditional deep dish and it was hardly the Chicago pie I’ve heard about. Slightly thicker crust, and the sauce holds almost all the flavor, the little there was.

Their home made cheese barely tasted like anything, and if it weren’t for the vegan meat crumble I’d completely forget what it tasted like between bites.

Amazing

We tried the popcorn tofu, philly cheese steak, and gyro with cheese fries. I loved the popcorn tofu and cheese sauce for the fries especially. Their cheese sauce is home made and so good I literally dreamed about how good it tasted the night after I had it. The popcorn tofu reminded me of popcorn shrimp and the flavor was so incredible. Highly recommend, will definitely be back next time we visit Chicago.

Pros: Cool atmosphere , Amazing popcorn tofu

Cons: Didn't really like the band that was playing

Cool place with good food!

I visited here with a friend and we got a deep dish veggie pizza. I wanted to have a true Chicago style pizza! The cheese was incredible and the artichokes really were the star of the show.

The pizza is REALLY filling so we didn’t get to try much else besides coffee and peach tea. The menu is expansive and I would totally go back to try more.

This place is a restaurant/bar so if you go during a busy time you can expect a loud atmosphere. We went as soon as it opened and it was more quiet. They have lots of free games and the guy working there was incredibly sweet. Would go back again!

This isn't a restaurant, it's a bar

It's called a restaurant and lounge, and they have live music, but this is a bar. You'll enter to find a loud, somewhat small, and dimly lit space for serving drinks and a small assortment of tables for dining.

That said? The food is phenomenal. The deep dish pizza hits unbelievably well, the mac and cheese is authentic, the popcorn tofu gives off KFC vibes, the fries are ideal diner food, and the burgers are delicious.

the good and not great

ordered the traditional deep dish, chili cheese fries, a slice of the chocolate peanut butter brownie cheesecake, and a slice of the caramel apple crumb pie. first things first is that this is older style vegan food, from before we became obsessed with recreating animal products super realistically; the meat and cheeze products don't taste terribly like real meat and dairy cheese. besides that, the deep dish was delicious and had a fantastic crust that my friend and i raved about. the chili cheese fries were less fantastic. the fries and chili were delicious but the cheese was chunky, sticky, and didn't taste like anything and i ended up picking it off. i didn't receive the brownie cheesecake and got the cookie crust mud pie, which was delicious but so rich i couldn't eat more than a bite or two at a time (it ended up taking 3 sessions just to eat one slice!). my friend got the apple crumble pie and said it was delicious. overall it was very good, but be mindful with the substitutes if you're used to modern meat replacements and dairy free cheeze!

Great vibes but food was a let down

I genuinely really wanted to like this place’s food. The vibe is great, laid back. Started out with the pita bread and dip which was great. Waiter was very nice. Gave us recommendations. We ended up going with the sausage/pep deep dish.

What a mistake.

The mock meats tasted completely uncooked and just not good. I’ve had plenty of pizzas with mock meat on them. This was the worst one by far. Had the pan macaroni pizza. Presentation was nice but just left you wanting more. It was completely mediocre. Even the cheesy bread was meh.

Overall the food is mid but a nice place to get a few drinks with friends. Can’t see myself eating here again despite living 5-10 minutes away. It was that bad

Yummy Deep Dish

This vegan restaurant has a mix of different menu items, but we specifically went for the deep dish pizza. We don't have vegan deep dish in Columbus, so it was a must in Chicago. The deep dish crust was awesome, and I loved the Mac n cheese pizza (I think I was the only one) we also got a traditional deep dish with vegan sausage, a great marinara and vegan cheese. Prices were good, and the service was as well.

Pros: Variety of options

Vegan Chicago Deep Dish Pizza

Another 100% Vegan Chicago Restaurant!

I would rate the food 3.5/5. Here’s my explanation and personal experience.

I ordered the fully loaded deep dish. Reason for this? About 4-5 years ago, (before I turned vegan) I would visit Giordanos or Lou Malnati's Pizza for a deep dish. Now that I am 100% vegan since 4 years, those two restaurants are no longer an option for me. Thus, I searched for deep dish vegan pizza and found this here restaurant. The deep dish pizza tastes good! It is however not my number one favorite. It’s a good but not amazing out of the ordinary experience. (My opinion)

Ranch dressing for dip: I did ask for extra ranch, the ranch however was was unfortunately 1/5. taste did not match original taste whatsoever and the dip itself was just fluid, way too much liquid.

I also tried the caramel apple pie; 3/5 not my taste; very sticky and sweet. It was ok.

Rating the service: the service was great, the staff was super friendly. Awesome exchange with convinced vegan staff. (partly)

Atmosphere: I chose to take the food „to go“. For me, personally, the restaurant was not my style. Music was a little too loud and restaurant did not give me a comfortable quiet dining vibe, more of a bar vibe.

Check out pictures for better impression which reminds me; it would have been more helpful for me, if the menu would have had pictures for better visual evaluation of choices.

Lastly! I Love that the vegan community is growing & I am grateful for just another vegan restaurant that wants to give us a good fast food experience.

Take care & Bon Appetit!

Ps! Just by the way; the reason for the spooky decoration was the Halloween season; I suppose. #Veganuary

Pros: Parking spots available , Good service , Big vegan menu selection

Unique dining experience

Unique dining room with super friendly staff. We ordered the wings which were excellent- spicy with just the right amount of crunch. In addition we had the fully loaded deep dish pizza - we had the spicy giardiniera on the side which I recommend. Took dessert to go - lots of scrumptious sounding/ looking options and can’t wait to try it when we get home.

Pros: Spicy, crunchy wings, Unique dining room , Super friendly staff

Cons: Concert going on in room next to bar/ restaurant , Water on table was a bit too warm

Definitely worth trying

I had the pepperoni deep dish and a family member had the cheese pan pizza. The cheese was more like a liquid sauce and not the most flavorful. I enjoyed the deep dish more, the crust and sauce were good. I could barely tell there was pepperoni on it. Overall, the pizza was just okay.

Also had the mocha brownie and carrot cake. Those were both excellent (more so the carrot cake). The brownie was very rich and coffee flavored.

The atmosphere of the restaurant was fun, there was live music in another part from the bar (you had to pay a cover to get in). Lots of fun decoration, plants, and friendly staff.

Would definitely like to return someday.

Skip the pizza

This was the only place I could find in Chicago with vegan deep dish pizza. I’m disappointed in the quality of the pizza we got. We tried 3 varieties of their crust and they were all not great. The sauce was over powering in flavor, the crust was almost impossible to chew, and the deep dish was thinner than the pan and original crust pizza we ordered. I have never not liked pizza, but me and my family did not enjoy this pizza.

There are so many great food places in Chicago, go somewhere else.

Pros: Reasonable prices, Quick delivery , Friendly staff

Cons: Crust was like burned cardboard , Sauce was not great

The pizza can be hit or miss depending on who is in the kitchen. The chicken sandwiches NEVER miss. Sarpinos, My Pi, and Gino's East also have vegan deep dish (vegan cheese available and crust is vegan).

Food & Music venue

This spot used to just serve food when I visited in Feb 2022 but this time they made their big area a music venue with a stage. The bar side is now for eating. The pizza is still amazing and they have so many options for dessert! I was not personally a fan of the okra puppies but still highly suggest visiting this eclectic spot. Games and a funky vibe to welcome you.

Not as good

Husband and I went here because we heard of the great reviews and top of the line pizza. We ordered a deep dish with sausage and onions (sadly they were out of mushrooms). First bite reminded me of jarred marinara sauce and didn’t really care for the liquid like cheese. I kept eating though because I really liked the crust and the Vegan sausage. It got a bit better. My husband loved it. The service was great though and very friendly waiter. It was a very hot day and their air conditioner wasn’t working, so very hot inside.

Pros: Pizza crust, Staff, Parking

Cons: Sauce, Vegan cheese, No air conditioner

Disappointing

I had deep dish from here 2 years ago and absolutely fell in love. It was #1 on my list when returning to chicago. We went there and it was so bad. 💔 the pizza was so…wet… it was just gross. So disappointed by it! Idk what has changed but it’s definitely different. Won’t be returning.

Eclectic and delicious

Eclectic interior with amazing food. Really recommend the cauliflower wings, they are probably the best we have had. Pizza is really good too, a perfect, began way to scratch the itch for deep dish. Absolutely would recommend.

Food is okay. Service is horrible.

Loved the old location. Was prepared to love this location even more. Absolutely loved how fun and nautical it was inside. Ordered an appetizer and pizza at 4pm. There were 3 other tables with 2 people each. And one person at the bar. Waited 45 minutes for the pizza. Then after we ate. Arrived our appetizer. (Literally thrown on our table) Over an hour after we ordered it. Instead of acknowledging their mistake of first serving our appetizer to the wrong table. We realized that we ate a pizza that was probably another tables pizza. That’s why it wasn’t very good? It was definitely not NY style. Floppy and soggy.
No one would have any eye contact with us after that. Zooming past our table. After 15 minutes of trying to get someone’s attention. We had to walk to the bar and still the two employees continue to talk. Finally one of them walked back to the kitchen and the other employee turned his back. We just wanted to pay our bill for the pizza. We didn’t touch the appetizer. It was still bubbling. But we wanted to get out of there. Since no one was going to get us a to go box. It was awkward, just take our money.
We paid $50 for a soggy pizza and I can think of a dozen other vegan spots in the city I’d recommend for pizza before this place.
Maybe I’d go back for a show and try a cocktail.
Such a bummer. The spinach artichoke dip has always been delightful.

All it would have taken was someone to say they goofed or even just friendly banter and our experience perhaps could have been completely different.

Pros: The new spot is cute. , Artichoke spinach dip is delightful

Cons: Soggy pizza , Rude service , 45 minutes for New York style?

ABSOLUTE BEST VEGAN PIZZA

This place is amazing and I wish I could move to Chicago just to be near Kitchen 17. I LOVE their New York style (deep dish just isn’t really my thing but it looks legit)
Their cheese they make is the closest thing I’ve had to real cheese on a pizza or otherwise.
Their desserts are also incredible. They have a whole cooler of different things. The peanut butter brownie pie thing is my favorite but only because I refuse not to get it every time and haven’t tried anything else

Pros: New York style , Cheese, Desserts

Cons: Service is lacking usually but who cares

It’s worth a shot!

I decided to give Kitchen 17 a shot after reading about them in a vegan food blog, and seeing them on the Happy Cow app. I was excited to try the home of the original vegan Chicago style deep dish pizza.

We ordered the Buffalo Cauliflower Wings which were absolutely phenomenal, and I’d totally order those again!

We ordered a traditional Chicago Style Deep Dish which had sausage and pepperoni. I had mixed feelings about it. Overall it was good, but I was hoping for more. The crust was great, and what I expected, and y’all nailed the flavor on the sausage! However, I didn’t really get anything that resembled the taste of pepperoni, and I thought the liquid like cheese was an odd choice, and just not the texture I’m looking for when eating pizza.

All of that being said though I’d go back and try some other variations of pizza as well as other menu items.

Pros: All vegan, Unique atmosphere , Cauliflower Buffalo wings

Cons: Really missed on the pepperoni flavor , Liquid cheese is an odd texture for pizza, It was uncomfortably warm in the building

I Want to Love This Place

Their menu looks amazing and I know so many people love their food. I think I'm in the minority though in that I haven't had one thing I've enjoyed from here. We've tried their pizza, sandwiches, burgers...nothing has tasted good enough to order again.
