A tiny gem in Oak Bay - Edit

We had lunch at Kissako this week for the first time. It looks and feels like a cozy little mom & pop cafe in Japan. We were transported back to Japan by the meal, the ambience, the decorations, the friendly Japanese conversation and the Okinawan music playing in the background. There are only 6 or 7 tables, most of them for 2 people, so it’s quite small, and also quite popular. We arrived right at noon - a good time; the tables filled up while we were eating. Other people phoned in their orders and then arrived to pick them up and take them out. The menu is posted on boards on the wall – all in English, but you can speak Japanese with the owners if you like. About half of the menu is vegetarian. The vegetarian sushi is made with brown rice and there are 4 types: spinach & avocado, shiitake & avocado, tempura yam and inari, all $4.50 each. Miso soups are made without fish broth. The two of us shared vegetarian gyoza, agedashi tofu, pan-fried tofu with vegetables, green tea cheesecake and matcha latte. The hot food prices range from $5.95 to $8.95. Our order was prepared and delivered promptly – so fresh and delicious. Desserts include some greet tea items: green tea cheesecake, green tea roll and green tea ice cream. There are also non-dairy desserts: annindofu (almond pudding made with tofu), daifuku (sweet azuki beans and mochi), and mini apple and blueberry pie. This is a little gem of a place – almost like a trip to Japan.

Pros: great food, friendly owners, Japanese ambience
