Bad Experience

Just want to share the facts of my unpleasant experiences.

Called on 1 May to reserve a table for dinner on 2 May, 6.15pm. When I reached the coffee shop, the first order-taking staff just kept quiet after being informed that I had reserved a table. He then informed the second order-taking staff and ignored me from that point onwards. It was very clear that there was no table reserved as every table was taken. And people at those tables with "Reserved" signs are still waiting for their food, not finishing or whatsoever.

I approached the second order-taking staff and informed him about my reservation. He just acknowledged and walked away to do his own chores. I approached him again and he said that they are operating in a coffee shop and there's no guaranteed reservation. I said he should have informed me when I called to make the reservation. I told him that I'm very sure this was not communicated as there is no logic in making a reservation that is not confirmed. He kept insisting that he had communicated that during my call and just walked away.

In fact during my call, I had checked with the staff how long would be the estimated waiting time for the dishes to be served after ordering. The staff on the call kept promising that they are now more efficient and the waiting time would not be so long.

The reason for me asking is because:

- On one recent evening (not on 1st/15th of the lunar calendar), the waiting time for take-away was 30 mins.

- On 1 May (which coincides with the 1st of a lunar month), I was told that the waiting time for take-away order is one hour when I was at the stall before 5pm, which is non-peak hours.

Just want to kept any reader to be informed so that their expectations can be managed.

At the end of the day, I just have to called another eatery to reserve a table for my whole family. Definitely a very unpleasant experience when my family is gathering for a celebration.

Another unpleasant experience on 9 Nov 2024,

Today, when I went to pack food, the boss blatantly let another customer cut queue. When I highlighted to the boss that that customer jumped queue, he just commented that the particular customer is like that. Not even apologetic that he's condoning that kind of behaviour.

Disappointing attitude.

Nice food

The food is delicious. The menu is well prepared with large variety. The staff service is good. It started raining just before the food is served, and they offered us empty reserved table away from the side where rain fell in easily. The stall also seem to have won an award.

Keat Lim, Singapore

The menu is very heavy on mock meat dishes. I ordered the mixed vegetable soup, since there was no mention of mock meat with this dish on the menu. It turned the soup contained what looked like mock beef or mock duck. I asked the guy what it was. He said its gluten. I suggested he updates the menu to make it clearer what to expect in this dish. He gave me what seemed an unconcerned answer, stating 'This is a Chinese restaurant, Chinese customers know to expect this comes with gluten."

Cons: Unwelcome ingredient surprises, Very mock meat heavy menu, Dairy products also used

Hi vegankuntz
I agree with Keat Lim's explanation, it is indeed normal for Chinese stalls in Singapore to use mock meat. If you have any preference/allergy/vegan requirement, do highlight your preference when ordering.

Also, mock meat is more expensive under vegetables. i doubt keat lim will put a lot of mock meat, at most 2-3 pieces.

also keat lim is just a veg stall, not high class cafe or restaurant.
Not realistic to expect such stall to have ingredients clearly stated on the menu.

Hi @jimmyseah

1) "it is indeed normal for Chinese stalls in Singapore to use mock meat." Please pardon me but so what? There's lots of things that occur normally in different parts of this world (e.g. eating meat). That doesn't mean such activities should be accepted and defended instead of aspiring to something more beneficial.

2) "Not realistic to expect such stall to have ingredients clearly stated on the menu.". Why not? It's hardly beyond the wit of humanity.

3) I hope its OK to politely enquire, given your determination to support poor service standards at this venue, are the management of this venue friends of yours? Have you alternatively considered the benefits of:

a) consumer empowerment through accurate menu info
b) feedback in reviews in a vector to elevate service standards

Try the whole food items

22/4/22
Visited on Earth Day

4 items ordered

*Claypot Nyonya Mock Fish
Gravy is OK however little vege and too many pieces of salty Mock Fish.
The seaweed wrapping the Fish has very strong Fishy taste 😅 as the temperature running down... it tasted like kiam hee 😝

*Sweet and Sour Abalone Mushroom
Was not served immediately thus when it reached us is barely warm, tasted like sticky rubber and greasy
(There is only one staff mending the order counter cum food runner. Understand they are short handed, however some food has to be served immediately 😊)

*Braised Mock Duck
I was stunned when it was served as it looked so so much different from the photo , as if the Duck has met an accident along the way to us 🤣 but luckily it tasted good.

*Beancurd with Black Bean Sauce
This is a decent beancurd dish and should not fail, no surprise no wow.

Average waiting time , 20 mins and above for dining in.
Suggest to get a table first before ordering.
Food was not served all at once, at least 10 mins interval between the dishes.
