University cafeteria at the Kashiwa Campus

This is one of the two cafeterias on the university campus. As with many other university cafeterias, it is open to the general public. The other one, called Plaza Ikoi, although larger, has far fewer vegetarian options.

Here, you'll find two vegan options: pasta with a tomato based sauce and "Topping Curry", both 460 yen. They stop serving pasta just before 2pm. However, the topping curry is served all day and is topped with a chunk of courgette/zucchini, red pepper, sweet potato, swetcorn and lotus rhizome (renkon), the same topping used for the pasta. There is a version of this curry without vegetables at 390 yen.

You either pay at the counter with a SUICA/PASMO card, or buy a card at the machine near the east entrance. The curries are served at the middle counter, and the pasta is served at the counter on the right hand side, along with noodles.

Prices are very reasonable. Free hot or cold green tea is available. They also sell small dishes of vegetables, etc, for 100 yen. Some have meat, so look carefully. If you want hiyayakko (cold tofu), ask for one without bonito fish flakes. You might find okra with sesame, green leaf vegetables, mixed beans - it depends on the day.

The COOP shop next door also sells a variety of soya milks, sometimes vegan bagels, MTR Indian curries and other snacks like nuts and dried fruit.

Pros: Cheap, Non-smoking, Not much else is vegan in Kashiwa!

Cons: Only about two main options are vegan, They stop serving pasta early

Update. As of March 2024, the vegan pasta and curry have not returned since the start of the pandemic. Head over to the cafeteria a minute's walk away from this place to try the salad bar which has more vegan options.
