Serves meat, vegan options available. Formerly veg but no longer, reported to HappyCow 2009 as now serving fish also. Named after a 4-armed Indian deity that sits in a cross-legged posture meditating on a tender pink lotus. Menu is rotated daily to keep the color and composition of the food in balance with the celestial body that earth is aligned to on that day. Chefs put their strongest accents on ayurvedic recipes of which an ingredient is ghee. The staff do speak English and try to be helpful. Extensive menu also in English. Reported closed to HappyCow.

Not impressed - Edit
A long menu, but very regular food, not much taste. Hard chairs, not comfortable at all (if that matters ;).

A Good Place - Edit
Not so expensive. Maybe by Lat standards, but having a tasty, reasonably healthy, elegant dinner in the city center for $10-$15 doesn't seem so terrible. Small, attractive, friendly place. Small menu, but you'll find something good. Even vegans, though there is ample dairy served. Bring cash, as the credit card decals don't seem quite accurate.

Expensive! - Edit
This summer you see a lot of signs sreaming "DISCOUNT!!" in Riga. Even at restaurants. This night there was a 30 percent discount at Kamala but still the food we ordered was very expensive.
Read moreA plate with two big (very tasty) samosas for 7,5 EURO/6,5 USD is much to much even if you can add 30 percent discount to that.
The menu was very ambitious, the restaurant interior was nice and warm but we were the only guests during our whole meal. Which consisted of tasty ravioli with mushrooms, very tasty "dumplings" with spinach and fresh cheese in a sauce of tomato/grated coconut/custard seeds (yummy!) and a poor plate with ordinary vegetables and some indian cheese (paneer).

Worth a visit. - Edit
memory is a bit hazy as this was some time ago, but I remember a long and highly descriptive menu, large portions and enjoying the meal very much. The atmosphere was interesting and relaxing. Vaguely remember it not being open as often as one might expect.

Excellent fodd but slow service - Edit
I went there after Easter with a group of church teen agers, all girls. Everybody loved the food, and especially us vegetarians and vegans. It was also good for the milk protein allergic person as well. After having eaten mainly boiled potatoes and carrots in the Latvian countryside for several days we were thrilled to enter a veggie restaurant in Riga and to take a look at their menu.
Read moreThe vegan food had a special sign so you could see it right away. Plenty of tasty food in an exotic environment but it took very long for us to get the food. Don't come starving like we did or order tasters to eat, which we didn't. The couple that had come before us also had to wait very long for there food, so it wasn't just because we were a group that it took a while. But after all, the food is worth waiting for. We had a very plesant evening. Kamala is situated in the Old City of Riga which is very nice for visitors, but probably brings up the prices.

Best place we visited - Edit
We visited Riga in February and it really was incredibly cold. Kamala was a welcome respite for hot soup and tea when the weather just got too much!! Lots of choice, reasonably priced and pretty helpful staff on which items were vegan. All the soups and dhals we tried were great but some of the tempura items were bland and stodgy. Overall it was really good but I think it helps if you befriend your waiter/ess!!

most unhelpful and unfriendly! - Edit
I tried, very hard, to get something to eat here. The list was long & very tempting and the place looked nice BUT I went THREE times to get food and each time was met by a very UNhelpful woman.
Read more1) I asked what time they were open until and she told me 11 so I asked if I could have a table but she told me the kitchen closed at 10 (this was at 9.45). She was not friendly or apologetic about this.
2) I went the next day at 6pm and asked if I could reserve a table outside and made it clear that I wanted to eat when I came back. She was very unhelpful again but finally suggested to come back at 9pm but I thought this would be cutting it fine with the kitchen so I suggested 8pm would be better so she agreed.
3)I came back at 8pm and there was a nice table outside with a couple having coffee so I pointed them out and said I would come back in a few minutes. 10 mins later I returned with what I thought perfect timing as they were just leaving. I went in to tell her I would take the table and when she came out she told me to my utter disbelief that I would probably NOT be able to eat!! I sat there in amazement and finally went inside to check my ears were not deceiving me but her attitude was awful again and so I told her to forget it fearing that I would sit there for an hour before being told again that I could not eat!!
If you want to try the place, eat before you go or take a packed lunch!!
Pros: good menu, nice setting
Cons: wait FOR AGES, Very unfriendly, kitchen closes v. early

Kamala, Riga - Edit
I've been here on a few visits to Riga. The restaurant has a great location right in the heart of the old town. The restaurant is small, clean and cosy with tasty food and pleasant staff. It takes a little while for each order to be prepared. It can take a little bit of doing to get through what vegan means (the vegan dishes on the menu are not marked). Ghee is in a lot of dishes but can be removed on request. The apple curry was very nice.

Cons: Meal could be quicker, Vegan dishes not marked
