1st timers for new vegetarians - Edit

really enjoyed our meals. we are new to an all plant based diet and this was our first experience with eating out. Seiten Special and Curry chana was the best. staff was very patient with us while asking questions and making decisions. we will go again next time in Daytona.

Yummy, disorganized - Edit

Kale Cafe has some really tasty food. My family and I stopped here for dinner and breakfast the following morning. We were staying in Daytona for my brother's birthday. Being one of the only real vegan options around, we went here. We ordered entrees and smoothies. Everything was well seasoned. The staff was friendly, but if I'm being honest everyone seemed a little mellow and disorganized. It was unclear how to order and being walked through it wasn't easy either. I've wanted to attend events they have held as well, that I've found through FB, but the details are never clear. Most people won't sign up for something if they don't know what they are signing up for. Which is such a shame, since their food is so good. If they could just get things organized a little, I would imagine they could have even more business. Step up your game Kale Cafe!

Pros: Good food, Variety

Cons: Disorganized

Don't go for dinner... - Edit

I really wanted to have a better experience at Kale Cafe. My wife and I have been Vegan for 4 years and always go to Vegan friendly restaurants in our on-the-water travels. So we arrived in Daytona and went looking for a place to have dinner. Dancing Avacado was closed since they are only open for lunch. Kale was open until 7, which is a strange closing time.

It's now obvious why it's only open until 7. The food appears to be all pre-prepared for lunch. Then it sits around for hours hoping some unsuspecting visitor will fall through the door for dinner. We were the only ones there from 6-7. We were unsuspecting.

Prices were OK and the staff was excellent. But ultimately, the food has to be great too. The food was fair at best. It seemed to have a fair amount of oil that just didn't feel right for Vegan food - and we sampled about 6 different dishes, had specialty juices, and even took home some dessert. All of it felt really heavy and old.

Take a hint from Dancing A - close for dinner. You lost me from ever coming back and I honestly feel no joy in that.

Vegan restaurants have to be better than others. This one isn't, at least for dinner. Sorry guys...

Pros: it's Vegan, the staff, the location

Cons: the food (for dinner)

I have been all over the world and you can't beat the food, vibes or prices. Real home cooked vegan food.

Pros: everything vegan and organic

Cons: closes at 7 and 8 weekends.

best UnChicken sandwich ever!! - Edit

We drove up from Daytona Beach two days in a row for their sandwiches! The first day my husband went in to get take away when the girls were sleeping. The second day I went in with our girls (4&2yrs old) and had a really fun experience walking into the back room where they offer events and it seems where they homeschool their kids. I was told there are 8 kids among many families who run (and run around) this business. It's a place where the compassion and consciousness shows on the walls displaying children's art and tribal masks, a corner piano, awesome jamaican-inspired painted walls.

Definitely use the bathroom to wash your hands after you order to experience what goes on behind the scenes. You have time as the food takes a while to receive....but it's sooo worth it! Maybe order a juice or smoothie as you wait. And go in the back. It's ok. You will likely be greeted by someone in the kitchen to welcome you and explain their full spectrum purpose there.

Oh the food! We ordered the burger with yummy sautéed mushrooms and the UnChicken sandwiches. The crispy square pan fried sandwich bread is perfectly prepared for these yummy sandwiches with both had super yummy kale on it.

Pros: full spectrum conscious cafe with warm smiling tho

Cons: vegan muffins a bit dry. scone was ok. pastries no

nice staff, cool vibe, dense food and massive portions - Edit

Happy to find on a road trip. we enjoyed all of the food we ordered but it was like a Thanksgiving feast with massive portions and dense carb heavy food. As a result there was a lot of waste from our meal. So if you are really hungry or looking for a feast this place is great. However my wife was turned off as she wanted something lighter. I should note that we are northerners and find southern food to be very "heavy", as in loads of carbs and fat, in general so it might just be a southern thing. I ordered a veggie burger which was great and a side which was probably 1000 calories worth of (delicious) sweet potatoes. you may want to ask for a half portion of sides. Rice and beans was particularly well seasoned and the vegan lasagna was fantastic.

the staff were all super nice and friendly but the service and payment process was disorganized and I'd worry about things getting messed up during a busy time.
The bottom line is its a great place with tasty food but unless you ate looking for a Thanksgiving feast consider asking for a half portion of sides. I find food waste to be a moral problem and the large portions encourage waste.

Pros: totally vegan!, delicious food cool vibe, large portions

Cons: disorganized , large portions , heavy food

Tasty and unique vegan food - Edit

Great food. Brown stew tofu is incredible. Some of the best kale salad I've had! Interior could use a little sprucing up but we'd definitely go back because the food was so good. Desserts too.

healthy huge portions - Edit

The restaurant is painted in vibrant green yellow and orange with a casual Caribbean vibe. It was packed. I had the vegan plate which was $10 for a main with three sides. They only offer a few of the items on the menu at a time. I had the sweet and sour seitan, kale salad, rice and beans and jerk mushrooms. The huge servings were all vegan and delicious. My daughter liked her veggie burger which was topped with kale salad. The kid's plate was $6 and included one main and one side - and it too was huge.

They are located in a wonderful downtown location with lots of free parking in back.

Pros: big servings reasonable prices, healthy, friendly service

Cons: not everything on menu available, tables should be cleaned between customers

Great place to stop while traveling - Edit

My husband and I enjoyed our lunch plates in addition to our to go smoothies. Perfect for the road. Nothing better than walking into a place to eat and not having to tear their menu apart. Well worth going as everything we are was excellent!!!

Awesome 100% Vegan Food - Edit

Ate the value meal three days in a row during my visit. You get a main course and three sides. You have to try their smoothies which are 100% natural and awesome! If they have the jerk mushrooms the day you're there, you've got to try them!!!

Pros: meals & smoothies

Cons: It's 60 miles from my house...

One of the best!!! - Edit

I absolutely loved this place.
The food is outstanding! The owner loves what she does and she puts her heart into it. She has her kids there involved in her passion. My kids loved the food and played with the owner's kids. I am so looking forward to going back. We will make a stop on our way to Sarasota from Toronto even though it's not on our way :)
Love, love, love it!

Pros: Delicious, Good amount, Fresh and organic

Filling food from a caring family - Edit

This will be a place to watch in the vegan food scene. The food is already excellent and the owners and employes are compassionate vegans. The atmosphere is more than a little unusual for a restaurant, but that is what makes the dinning experience here unique. The food is prepared ahead of time and the menu changes daily. Each entree comes with three sides and there can be six available. The dessert selection is not varied but it is excellent. Their raw pie was a cheesecake on this night and it had a very filling nut and dried cranberry crust to go along with the filling. The family atmosphere and filling food makes anyone visiting feel like they are home.

Pros: all vegan menu , dessert, quick service

Cons: lack of formal dinning experience , not yet finished interior and dinning space

Don't waste your time - Edit

Updated from previous review on Thursday December 05, 2013

Unfortunately, Kale Cafe has gone downhill. The food is never ready and the owners don't seem too much in a rush to feed people who are waiting. The last time we were there, we were told that the folks in front of us would be eating all of what was prepared, and they weren't sure when more food would be ready. Really? While the food is great if you can get some, the service is terrible.

Cons: Slow, Poor service, Food is never ready

Jamaican Vegan Heaven! - Edit

This is such a lovely little place! It's a vegan's heaven - and now they have desserts, too! Not only is the food variable, it's full of flavor. On the plus side, the kale salad is the best kale salad I've ever eaten in a restaurant anywhere - raw, heady with garlic and lemon... I usually recommend a double portion. Also on the plus side is the portion sizes. They're not too big, but boy are you topped off when you leave. The juices are out of this world and, when I asked them about it, they said they would be happy to provide juices for a cleanse or for a juice fast! The owners are incredibly nice and very knowledgeable about healthy eating in the area. If I was going to be critical, I would say the 'rice and peas' is a bit of a misnomer - it's really rice and beans, but you wouldn't know unless you asked. But they're yummy rice and beans!

Pros: food!, price, freshness (and dessert!)

Cons: can be a little loud, ask questions about the menu to clarify

True Vegan and Delicious! - Edit

My husband said that our meal at Kale Cafe was the best he's had since moving to FL 2 months ago. We sampled several of the offerings of the day and all were uniquely delicious and fresh! The cajun (jerk?) mushrooms were our favorite, though we loved all of the things we tasted. We are definitely going to eat there as often as possible.

Pros: Fresh and creative, Very friendly and helpful staff, Delicious

Cons: Still unfinished decor, A bit confusing as to what is available

AHHHHMAZING - Edit

Let me tell you, this is the REAL DEAL. They know how to do green smoothies RIGHT and everything they serve is absolutely delicious. Their kale salad is some of the best I have ever had - for me its as addictive as potato chips. Truly amazing. Go support Daytona's first vegan restaurant!!
And if you're a green smoothie addict like me, try their carrot mango for a nice change. Its delicious!
