Fell In Love With A British Girl, But More So The Food - Edit
(For those with a sense of humor)
Read moreMy ex girlfriend of 3 years became a first year at Durham University. We were lovers until she hooked up with a “randomer” at the club. Little did I know visiting her would make me fall in love with the food and not her.
It was a small café setting with a menu of vegetarian and vegan options. We sat at a small wooden table with a purple rose 🌹 in a glass. The café’s setting made it ideal for intimate, casual conversations. The shake made me realize I could do anything in life if I want it enough. The burger made me realize I could change the world.

Food quality: 10/10
Sadly, I’ve analyzed the reason for the cafe closing is due to the COVD-19 pandemic. To the owners of the café, if you ever stumble upon Happy Cow, your cooking genius has the potential to reach far and wide - no matter where travelers come from.
And to the girl I loved the most, the food kept me satisfied longer than you do.
Pros: Primarily plant-based, Food taste, Happy pricing
Cons: No longer in business , Nothing else

Undercooked and bland - Edit
We really wanna love all vegan restaurants and always support local vegan businesses, but this place was unfortunately a disappointment. The burgers were underdone (microwaved?) and the food lacked seasoning and texture. The toppings didn’t feel crispy and fresh and the bread was kinda stale. One highlight tho, the banana milkshake - really yummy! Sad to have to leave a bad review, but hope feedback like this can make them up their game.

3.5 Good but room for improvement - Edit
Chicken burger was good but the hotdog was quite mushy, could do with being cooked a bit more so it has some bite to it. Didn’t have shake or cake but they looked delicious. It’s great to have a vegan place in Durham and I hope they continue to gain popularity and take some suggestions on board. Food just didn’t really stand out.

Delicious shakes! - Edit
I haven’t had a milkshake since going vegan so was thrilled to find the Jumping Bean - their Oreo/ peanut butter shake with cream really hit the spot. Staff were friendly and keen to give out local vegan knowledge.

A Hidden Vegan Gem - Edit
I am a local and a regular at this place. I really look forward to my visits and my kids love it too. Clientele is very diverse including students, visitors and suited professionals. What they all have in common is that they took the time to find and visit this slightly out of the way 100% vegan place- and I rather like that. It’s the only permanent totally vegan establishment in Durham. My only wish is the usual “regular’s request” for a specials board. Anyway, Jumping Bean, I love you.

Had an awesome hotdog and fries for late lunch today at the Jumping Bean. Huge portion sizes all round by the look of it, really generous servings and well priced. Well worth a visit if you make it to Durham.

great junk food - Edit
They have all the classic junk food dishes, which is great. My favourite is probably the 'pulled pork' wrap. Their brownie is excellent (esecially if you choose to have it warmed up with an ice cream scoop and cream).

I cycled 13 miles here for a treat for myself, and wasn't disappointed. I ordered the pulled 'pork' wrap with fries-delicious. Staff member was a delight, so friendly and asked lots of questions about me, which made me feel very welcome. Huge selection of foods, teas, and cold drinks.

Give it a miss if you’re after a coffee - Edit
The coffee here used to be spectacular before the change of ownership. I went in for a coffee for the reopening and was served a soya cappuccino that curdled all the way to the bottom. I noticed they were using Aldi brand soya milk which I thought was weird. When I asked for a new coffee (americano instead) they explained to me that the milk wasn’t bad in the cappuccino. Well yes, that’s true and I’m aware that soya can curdle in hot drinks, but it doesn’t mean you should serve a thickly congealed coffee to a person. Hopefully they have started using a more suitable milk for coffee, like oatley barista.

But it's all right now, in fact, it's a gas! - Edit
A really nice and homely veggie cafe just a little way up the bank on the right after coming off North Road. The coffee is pretty awesome and worth the effort alone. Food is freshly prepared, tasty and quite creative. Since they changed hands in 2017 the predominantly vegan menu has become more USA / fast food influenced with burgers and hot dogs served with fries in red plastic baskets. There’s also a selection of wraps and an impressive looking vegan cake or brownie. We had a ham and cheese wrap and a mexican chilli dog both served with traditional fries which were subsequently drizzled in tomato ketchup. They were both priced at around £6.95 which was most reasonable. A prefect place to start a long day at the Durham Miner’s Gala.

Lunch Time Treat - Edit
Dropped into the Jumping Bean whilst passing through Durham for a spot of lunch. Initially disappointed as it only had 3 options on the menu and all were fast food, burgers, hotdogs or wraps.
Read moreOpted for a vegan Texas Dog from the specials board and it was delicious. Cheese, fries onions, bbq sauce and beer battered onion rings. Friendly staff, nice tea and reasonably priced. Would have liked the option of having something healthier but it unexpectedly hit the spot

Cons: Limited choice, No healthy options

Full of beans - Edit
On my first visit to the Jumping Bean cafe I remember leaving quite disappointed. The hummus sandwich was very bland but the coffee was excellent. However, fast forward a couple of years and it is amazing how a new menu can revitalise a place. On the menu there is so much more selection, all of which is or can be made vegan. I decided to order the Pulled P dog, whilst my wife ordered the currywurst, both of which were accompanied by chips and dips. The 'dogs' were delicious and had a very good 'meat like' texture to them and for under £7, a bargain. We also ordered a refreshing lemon and ginger tea. Although the menu has changed, the staff have remained as friendly as ever and the cafe still has that relaxing atmosphere to it. Next time we will get cake!

Lovely little place - Edit
We went on Easter Sunday for lunch. Place is small but very cosy. The staff were really friendly and nice to the kids. The food we had was really tasty, especially the stack burger, dirty fries, mudpie and peanut butter Oreo milkshake the kids had. The "meat" in the burger and bacon was really close to real meat! Everything was veggie but could be made vegan.

love this place - Edit
Used to go in all the time, then it had a makeover and changed the menu - was a bit unsure to start with but oh wow the food is amazing. I got a Pulled P Dog (entirely vegan) and it was delicious. After I got some Vegan Gluten Free Ginger Cake and some Vegan Chocolate Cake, both were some of the best cake I have ever eaten. Staff were lovely and service was great :)
