Best soba I tried in Japan! - Edit
So after spending a morning sightseeing in Kawagoe, we decided to try this soba shop. When we arrived, we thought it was closed as the door in the front was locked and there wasn't anyone making soba! Luckily, we decided to walk down the right side and noticed a sliding door that opened. There were people dining inside and we were welcomed in by the proprietor. We were seated in the first room on the left, and when we ventured to the restroom, we surmised that anything past the first dining room required removal of shoes before going up the steps. Slippers provided.
Read moreWe sat and looked over the menu, using Apple Translate since there was no menu in English. I think it did a pretty good job and the vegan options were marked prominently with a green "V". We each ordered a Sesame Soy Milk Soba w/Yuba and a Sesame Soy Milk to share. The owner was a little surprised by how much we ordered, but we mentioned that we wanted to share the second one.
The soba w/yuba arrived first and he gave us instructions on adding soy sauce a little at a time to flavor. There was fresh wasabi in the soba and the yuba was SOOO fresh! So OISHI! When we finished with those bowls, he brought out a platter with the soba separated into two piles and separate broth and soy sauce. How thoughtful! He also mentioned that there was no white sugar used in our meal, either. (He used his phone to translate since he didn't speak English).
I would go back here in a heartbeat. After spending three weeks in Japan, this was THE BEST SOBA I HAD!!!
Pros: OISHI vegan soba!, Friendly and helpful staff!
