Vegan bibimbap

Très chouette restaurant, lieu agréable et service adorable. Un bibimbap aux champignons est proposé, accompagné de ses banchans. Délicieux !

Vegan mushroom bibimbap!

Unlike most other bibimbap places in Jeonju, which will modify a meat-and-egg dish for vegans, this restaurant offers a mushroom bibimbap that is already vegan! It has several kinds of mushrooms including wood ear, shiitake, and king oyster mushrooms, as well as some other vegetables (lettuce, radish, bean sprouts, carrot). The staff was friendly and understood when we explained (using a translation app) that we were vegan. When they brought some banchan we could not eat (fish cakes, kimchi) they understood when we said no thank you and brought us extra tofu instead! Using the phrase “temple food” or “vegetarian no fish or egg” helps, since vegan isn’t a well-known term; however, they understand the ideas of veganism when explained using those terms and are very helpful with the banchan!

The mushroom bibimbap was good. I admit it wasn’t my favorite bibimbap I’ve had in Jeonju, but it was different and honestly that helped a lot since that’s the main dish for vegans available. They also let you control your own hot sauce so those who are spice averse will probably appreciate that. I love spice so I used a little extra to make up for what the dish was (gently) lacking in additional veggies.
