jar jar beam - Edit

bright, cosy shop with a few bar seats. two friendly staff, one of whom when he was preparing my salad with vegan soy sauce dressing told me that it contained onion (one of the five pungents) and that he wanted to be sure it would be okay for me.

i went with the combo set (beet-leave me berri smoothie, superfood jackpot salad, and pasta), which after including the surcharges for my choice of smoothie and salad came up to hk$118.

i'm used to having much bigger salad bowls/boxes elsewhere that are crammed with lots more ingredients, and was underwhelmed by the serving size here. the smoothie that came with the combo set was also served in a small jar. that said, i didn't leave hungry - just psychologically unsatiated.

i opted to have my salad shaken with the soy sauce dressing; it turned out an un-photogenic mush as a result. the soy sauce dressing was a tad too salty (turns out salt was added to the soy sauce) and overpowered the ingredients: i don't remember much of the salad except for kale, pomegranate and quinoa - maybe if the avocado and squash were chopped less finely it would have been less mushy? in future, i would ask for less dressing and wouldn't ask for it to be mixed.

they have an interesting set menu concept where you eat half your salad, then mix it with the pasta. if you're avoiding carbs, other options for the combo set are green apple or, for yet another surcharge, zoodles or a light salad. i'd have much preferred a bigger portion of salad rather than the serving of pasta.

when ordering, i attempted to ask if the pasta was wholegrain, and was told that it was, but was not gluten-free. i'd most likely used the wrong chinese word for "wholegrain", but it didn't look and taste like wholegrain pasta to me. more likely than not, i'm mistaken - but if i am not, i hope they will offer a wholegrain option for those who prefer a healthier meal. it would also be great if they could include more plant-based proteins and more vegan dressings for their vegan salads instead of olive oil and soy sauce.

as mentioned by a previous reviewer, the combo menu was confusing and i spent a long time mulling over it before deciding what to order. it would have helped if vegan options were clearly indicated.

from what i saw on the menu, everything was vegetarian except for fish sauce used in "f3. thai quinoa salad in fish sauce)".

Pros: friendly, smiley staff, whole foods; vegan-friendly, bright, relaxing ambience

Cons: not cheap; can get better for value salads, soy sauce dressing too salty, plastic straws used for in-house dining
