Good Luck Vegans

This place was pretty disappointing as a vegan hoping to eat a nice meal. The only item I thought I could order was the street tacos with the vegan chorizo as the protein. That makes the dish vegan right? No. They said their rice and fried beans were cooked with lard instead of oil. They subbed out the fried beans for black beans but I got no rice. What arrived looked like a reduced version of what the item was meant to be. It tasted as such too. I question why include vegan chorizo as a protein option, but then pair it in a dish with non-vegan rice and beans. The manager talked to us and was nice. I told him I was surprised by the lack of vegan options. He was friendly, gave me his business card, and even discounted my meal as a courtesy.

This restaurant needs to make it easier for vegans to order food without just reducing food off the plates. They need at least one vegan dish on the menu. They are perfectly capable of creating a dish with vegetables that could wow with flavor and look as chic on the plate as the design aesthetic of the restaurant.

Pros: The vibe, The manager

Cons: Lack of vegan options, Tricky menu, Price

Good ambience; okay choices | Updated 5/2024

I want to love iTzcali more than we do. It’s great for drinks but okay for meals. They do have really delicious guacamole as an appetizer but it comes with chicharrones that you have to sub out for chips. For dinner, they offer a paella dish called paella verduras that is vegan if you exclude the protein options. They added broccolini to ours for no charge. It was pretty spicy, which combined with the heat of the dish, was a bit tough to get through.

Overall we had a great dinner and enjoyed the ambience of the restaurant, but I’d love to have some more options.

**UPDATE May 2024**
They are now offering two vegan street tacos: soy al pastor and soy ceviche. We had the al pastor and we highly recommend them! The tacos come loaded with onions, cilantro, and pineapple and three salsas of increasing heat on the side. As with everything else, they are a bit pricey at $15 for three tacos. But great for date night.

Pros: Ambience, Guacamole (sub chips), Street tacos!

Cons: Paella is spicy
