Serves meat, vegan options available. Has veggie options and tortillas made by hand from organic, non-modified local corn. Open Mon-Sat 7:00am-4:00pm, Sun 7:00am-2:00pm.
I visited a while ago so I don't remember exactly what I ordered. I ordered one dish and the waiter suggested I add something else as the dish I chose was small. The first dish ended up being a tortilla with beans, and the second a rolled up tortilla with beans and spinach. Not filling at all especially for the price. The juice was also very small. I left feeling very confused about the rave reviews.
It's a great local experience, I came early after arriving by bus in Oaxaca early in the morning. It got packed very quickly a little later though! There weren't many tourists when I visited in March-22.
The ingredients are locally sourced, made to eat in the traditional ovens at the entrance of the restaurant, and the food was flavourful. You need to ask the staff to make something custom for it to be vegan (default options come with cheese). It was delicious though, I recommend it for breakfast if you're in the area - I'm not sure I would come to the area specifically for it, however. The drinks were delicious!
It's very budget-friendly, the staff is very lovely, and the terrace is very pleasant for a weekend brunch!
It’s a traditional non-alcoholic drink made from toasted maize, chocolate, achiote, ground pine nuts, vanilla, and sugar. It’s super addicting. Vegan tradition of Oaxaca.
I don’t speak Spanish and I figured it out. Stick with frijoles (beans) avoid queso (cheese). Had tacos and the solita tetelas. Also had a mint and lemon juice! This is a unique place with a positive mission.
For the negative reviews: sounds like you’re a toddler. You’re in a foreign country. Google translate their menu, if it isn’t in English. Duh?
It’s a shame that this place is getting bad reviews for not speaking English in Mexico. The items with cream and cheese are clearly marked on the menu, and they were able to make them vegan without any issues. The food was great, and more filling than I expected based on the size
Not recommended for vegans, probably ok for vegetarians - Edit
Don’t go here unless you speak fluent Spanish, you have the Vegan Passport app or you have a translation app on your phone. All the salsas are picante, so if you want mild, you are out of luck. All they can make for vegans are tortillas with mushrooms or beans, ok but not that thrilling. Probably is a great restaurant for omnis, but vegans shouldn’t bother to go here. Off the beaten track anyway.
There is absolutely no english spoken here which makes it impossible to communicate to order vegan. There are no vegan items on the menu per se, and anything ordered must be specified in spanish. My friend (who spoke limited spanish) ordered some veggie items for me and made it a point to note that there be no cheese. Instead, the items came filled with cream!
That said, the place looked unbelievable, there are fresh local ingredients, and the tortillas are made in the front of the location. There are tons of aqua frescas available. My friends said the food was delicious.
Excellent place to try local food but veg/vegan! - Edit
This place is a real local's breakfast/brunch spot and it's extremely vegetarian and vegan friendly. The menu is huge and in Spanish but there are lots of veg options. The waiter was really helpful and helped us (despite our broken Spanish) identify veg options. We had delicious avocado tacos (vegan) and cheese tetela (corn triangles).
This place is amazing. Several varieties of organic, heirloom corn used to make freshly-roasted specialties like tetelas, memelitas, tlayudas, etc. While vegans will have to settle for beans, mushrooms, and flowers for the most part, they also have delicious salsas and some other options. Vegetarians will have a lot more to choose from as most menu items include cheese. A bit of a walk from the center, but not difficult to find using the map, and in an un-touristy neighborhood which is worth visiting. Check it out, but note that it closes early, around 4 p.m. daily (earlier on Sundays).
