Went here everyday I was in York 5 years ago. Came back to town and was so happy to come back to this restaurant! All their food is divine and so beautifully presented. The staff are very friendly too :)

We visited on a weekday on a whim and were really glad we did! The staff were so friendly and lovely. We went with a toddler and baby and they were really accommodating.

So yummy! - Edit
Tried Ippuku for the first time today and had a great experience. There are lots of interesting and unusual vegan options which are clearly labelled, including the regular menu, a set vegan menu, specials, drinks, and several desserts. Everything we had was delicious (especially the matcha blondie for pudding!). The food felt light and healthy, not too sweet, oily or artificial. The staff were all very friendly and the service was quick despite having a full house. The atmosphere was nice and quiet.
Read moreThe only downside is that it is very expensive (we spent £70 on lunch for 2 people). Note that you do need to call at least a day in advance to make a booking - we tried walking in on a Saturday right at opening time but they were already fully booked for the whole day, so we made a booking for Sunday lunch instead.
We will definitely go back and try more of the menu!
Pros: Delicious, healthy food, Quiet atmosphere, Friendly staff
Cons: Expensive

Superb authentic carefully prepared Matcha teas like no other in the region. Attentive and friendly staff. Intricate and delicately prepared dishes. Unique and delicious desserts (tofu caramel cake anyone?) and a cosy atmosphere. Will definitely be returning.

Brilliant little find - Edit
Would give this place 5 stars if I could! Really tasty food, at least 50% of the menu is vegan all the time, loads of vegan cakes, friendly staff and a really authentic experience. You can also but Japanese products here.
Read moreWe have eaten the donburi before, which is very tasty. Today we went for cake and the chocolate and yuzu and raspberry and yuzu did not disappoint. A range of teas and coffees are also available (they even go so far as offering vegan whipped cream on the top of iced coffee).
To add to the uniqueness of Ippuku, downstairs there is a small library where you can borrow Japanese books.
Update: went back, had the tofu teriyaki mayo donburi bowl, which was delicious, and the chocolate brownie with a side of peach sorbet. Total YUM.

Nice little place but served me a non-vegan dish by mistake - Edit
Ippuko Tea House is a nice little place serving a range of Japanese dishes. There's a good selection of vegan options so I was excited about visiting. I was really enjoying my meal... and then I bit into an onigiri rice ball & found it was filled with tuna rather than pickled plum! I was obviously very upset about this error but they were very apologetic about it. It nonetheless really spoilt the experience for me. Would I return? Probably as it's a small business that's worth supporting. Just make sure you have got what you ordered before tucking in.

Very cute & tasty! - Edit
Quiet & quaint tea shop. The tables were full when we went so we took some cakes and a tea away - it was hard to choose as most options were vegan! We ended up having Yuzu chocolate cake and Matcha blondie - such unique flavours!

Amazing little traditional Japanese tea house - Edit
Absolutely loved this quiet little tea house just around the corner from the Minister & just up from the main shops; an ideal location. Most options were vegan on the mains menu, nearly all drinks could be made vegan & most of the cakes on the daily cakes board were also vegan...so many options it was hard to choose! I got the tofu teriyaki mayo donburi bowl (with miso soup of course!) which was super tasty & a really good size portion, then I couldn't resist a vegan matcha blondie, which was yummy, although I think you'd have to be a bit of a matcha addict like me to appreciate it. Will definitely be going again.

Was super excited to hear they were doing a Veganuary 3 course set menu & it did not disappoint! For a very fair £20, we had the most delicious traditional Japanese food unlike anything else I've ever tasted. For mains I had the Umami spaghetti; was better than any Italian pasta I've ever had! And for dessert the matcha zenzai, which was so bizarre to me, but really nice (though as in my previous review, I'm just a teeny bit biased towards matcha things!) Would definitely recommend & actually they're running the Veganuary menu into March so still plenty of time to try it!

Beautiful Authentic Experience - Edit
I ordered the Teriyaki Tofu Teishoku dish and wasn’t disappointed, in my opinion the best dish to order if you want a variety of different taste experiences. The aesthetic of the restaurant and cafe is extremely welcoming and has an authentic & home cooking vibe. I also ordered a flat white which was equally as delicious I just regret not choosing some tea to have, they have a super wide variety of tea to choose from! Overall, easily one of my favourite places visited in York.

So great and to be honest I’d give 5 stars despite them serving meat if I could. Delicious food, really nice little place with lots of vegan options and a whole dessert board full of vegan options too! Staff were lovely and you could book ahead of time which is useful since I was coming from out of town. COVID conscious too.

i have been to ippuku twice and thoroughly enjoyed both of my visits, the staff are really friendly and the menu is varied. the teriyaki tofu is so good and comes with a bunch of sides. the gyoza are also fantastic and their iced coffee is great. they used to have a vegan curry on the menu which i really miss because it was so tasty, i hope they bring it back! the prices are really reasonable for the amount and quality of food you get, really want to visit again soon and would recommend to anyone :)
