Actually good variety (if u're fast) - Edit
Been on the interislander ferry in January 2024 and the food and cafés seemed to have changed, they now have a canteen with several vegan meals, such as grilled tofu poke bowls, sandwiches and wraps. Be fast or you will find a closed counter with sold out food (I guess their prices are too fair). Found me a vegan sandwich which was absolutely fine but nothing too special, I liked that it had several types of veggies inside (spinach, bell pepper & kumara sweet potato, from what I remember).

You won’t starve aboard the Awatere ferry to Wellington - Edit
There is a cafeteria on the 4th floor of the ship. The chips and pie were good, we were a bit concerned if there was anything to eat onboard the Awatere Ferry, but it was fine. And hot chips are always a good choice (canola oil)
