Serves meat, vegan options available. Eritrean restaurant which has hummus with bread as a starter, and about 5 out of the 10 main dishes are marked as vegan. Order individual dishes, or share a huge mixed platter. All dishes are served on Eritrean pancake-like bread which is used with your hands to eat the food. Makes its own beer (two styles). Open Tue-Sat 6:00pm-1:00am, Sun 4:00pm-10:00pm.

Their lentils and their spinach on African flat bread are just delicious!! Madiba Afrika also has that option and I haven't decided yet where I like it better. Both reataurants are fantastic.

Fur seating - Edit

This restaurant offers very delicious East African food. It is not 100% authentic, but I think hardly any European will notice that. I can neither complain about the food or service, but we had the misfortune to be seated on real fur. It is recommended to make a reservation beforehand and at that occasion I'll ask to be seated somewhere else next time.

Most flavourful meal that I had in Mainz - Edit

I had a delicious shared vegan platter with friends that included a mix of potato, spinach, spicy lentil, shiro (chickpea), and fresh salad dishes. The injera here is made with wheat and corn flours rather than teff but it still has the springy, sour taste that you would expect. The wait staff speak English and we're very helpful in suggesting a combo for us.

“Im Herzen Afrikas” is an east-african restaurant that actually exists twice: One restaurant is in Frankfurt, the second and newer one in Mainz.

The owners want their guests to experience a bit of their country of origin, not only by tasting the traditional meals, but also by sitting in larger groups (either on the ground or on large tables) , by eating with their hands instead of using cutlery, by the relaxed atmosphere… and I feel that they succeed in doing so!

Visiting one of their restaurants is a great experience. The food is delicious. They have three vegan mains (lentils, potatos, spinach), and some other vegetarian ones. All are nicely spiced, and placed on mildly sour pancake-like Injera-bread. And you have to try their hummus as a starter! It is soooo delicious (but can be difficult to eat…). Also love their “Pembe” – homemade beer!

Nice food in social atmosphere - Edit

This is the first Eritrean place in Mainz and they offer a great variety of vegan dishes. Half of their main courses are vegan and the best you can do is to go there with some friends and order them all. They will serve them on a huge platter on some Eritean pancake-like bread which you can use with your hands to eat the food. You should make sure to just share such a platter with vegan friends (or such friends who are okay with just eating vegan here) as the dishes will inevitably intermix during your meal.

Also make sure to try their homemade beers, in particular the dark one is great!
