Not Quite Forn-ing Over It

Now well established as the almost ubiquitous Italian establishment that springs up on every new development across Dubai, I thought it high time that I actually see what all the fuss was about. Prior to this visit, the very fact that it has become so widespread has given me pause for thought, as I can’t say that I have ever been particularly bowled over by chain restaurants that churn out this most venerated of cuisines. However, ever the optimist, I was willing to at least give them a chance to prove me wrong.
The augers were good on arrival: tasteful (if not a little formulaic) decor, a spotlessly clean dining room, and gracious, attentive staff had me in a buoyant mood. The only thing that marred the initial impressions slightly was the paper placemats emblazoned with images of new menu items—an unnecessary touch that brought the sophistication level down quite considerably. This minor faux pas was not going to impact my assessment too heavily, though; I was far more concerned about what went on top of these slightly garish additions than the offending items themselves.
First to land upon them was a basket of freshly prepared focaccia. In my humble opinion, all meals should begin with some form of bread, and when it’s done well—as here—it’s pure joy. When came the suggestion of a second helping, I’d already said yes before the server could finish asking.
Next up was the highlight of the meal: the fried tofu sticks. Ample in portion, girthy in size, yet delicate to the bite, they carried far more flavour than I imagined they would and were offset nicely by the vegan mayo that accompanied them.
Finally came the main dishes. Despite my promise to judge this place solely on its merits, I will freely admit that I still had severe doubts that either dish would cut muster, and I’m afraid to say I was right to harbours such thoughts. The bolognaise was pretty nondescript; it lacked any real character and was rather bland. The risotto—a dish I adore when done right—fared marginally better; it did have an element of creaminess to it but, again, was lacklustre when it came to taste and seasoning. I will say that the serving sizes were generous, though this isn’t perhaps the boon it should have been when faced with such mediocrity.
I could perhaps be persuaded to return, if only for the starters alone, but the overall standard, as well as the price, might keep me away.
