Cheap but no clear vegan labelling - Edit
Ikea food is decent and really cheap! Getting some food is always a highlight of any ikea trip. This trip I got the veggie balls with quinoa, tomato & spinach ragout. My only gripe is that there’s no indication whether food is vegan or not in the restaurant. You can check ingredients on the website, but the signal is so rubbish in there (even on the wifi) it’s near impossible to access that in the queue for hot food. I’ve eaten in the bistro downstairs before and that’s all clearly labelled.

Cheap vegan options - Edit
The plant balls are the best “meatballs” ever. You can have them in the restaurant upstairs or buy a bag to cook them at home.
Read moreThe gravy and mashed potato are not vegan so is just plant balls, peas, chips and jam. Last Christmas they had vegan gravy but just for the season.
Sometimes they have new dishes, we tried a plate of rice called “Vegetable Biryani” which was not bad.
They have like chicken fingers and ice cream too!

IKEA - Edit
The vegan plant dog was acceptable, but not something I’d travel all the way to IKEA for! It just does the job.

Decent selection but could do more - Edit
There are three main areas within this IKEA where you can eat (a café at the entrance, a restaurant halfway through and another restaurant/café at the exit). I didn't have a chance to look in the café at the entrance so I don't know what options they offer. We also didn't eat at the restaurant at the exit but I saw as we walked past that they had plant-based hotdogs and vegan strawberry ice cream.
Read moreWe ate at the restaurant halfway through so I'll base most of my review on that. Firstly it's worth noting that if you haven't been to an IKEA before it has quite an unusual layout in that it's laid out as a winding route throughout the entire store which you have to follow sequentially (although there are some signposted shortcuts) rather than just browsing aisles. This means you do have to walk through half of the store to get to the restaurant (I think, unless I missed a shortcut).
The restaurant itself is canteen style and you take a tray and pick from a selection of cold food (self-serve) and hot food (served to you).
The first thing I noticed was that most of the cold food and drinks were not labelled with anything to distinguish if they were vegan, with the exception of the cheesecakes which said plant based on the labels. None of the hot food was labelled and I had to ask which items were vegan. It was a bit disappointing that the gravy and mash potato were not vegan (especially given how easy they are to make vegan). We got to choose from either 8 or 12 Plant Balls (a plant-based alternative to their iconic meatballs) and then pick which ever other bits we wanted to go with it. I chose the selection of basically all of the vegan options – chips, Plant Balls, peas and lingonberry jam (the only other vegan option was mushy peas). It was good value and I was happy with the portion sizes. It was £4.50 for the 8 Plant Ball meal or £5.50 for the 12. I also got a Biscuit Cheesecake for £3.50. The Plant Balls were delicious and definitely my favourite bit of the meal. The chips and jam were also decent but I didn't think the peas were very good and I didn't finish them. The Biscuit Cheesecake was okay. It didn't have much flavour and the texture was also just okay. I didn't really enjoy it and I didn't finish it.
I know that IKEA are moving towards a greater proportion of their food being plant based and it is nice to see them moving in that direction but there is definitely more they can do.
Note that they also sell bags of frozen Plant Balls in the shop
Pros: Delicious Plant Balls, Sells vegan desserts, Good value
Cons: Some of the food wasn't very good, Very little vegan labelling, Gravy and mash potato weren't vegan
