superior sushi

Cute, convenient sushi shop right opposite the train station. I’ve tried all 4 of their vegan nori rolls - standard avocado, teriyaki tofu, fried mushroom, and miso eggplant. Avocados are plentiful at the moment so the roll was chocked full of creamy chunks. Tofu had a great texture too and lots of sweet tasty sauce. The fried mushroom was nice and juicy but I think king oyster would have worked better than portobello which can be a bit wet. I love eggplant but thought the miso flavour could have come through more.

I think they‘re owned by the same people as My Little Bento down the road, which only opens in the evening. I love that they don’t use those tiny soy fish and wasabi and ginger packets. You can add your own from bottles and jars on the counter. Certainly feel better about eating here than the big sushi chains in the city and shopping centres and will definitely try more of their menu.

EDIT: One star off for the boring bento.

Ok

We came here for dinner after seeing a Google review that they have a separate vegan menu. When we got there we found that the labelled vegetarian (vegan) menu actually does not differentiate between the two and the chef came over to tell us what actually is not vegan on the menu. So anything with terriyaki sauce has got honey mixed in it, so my first choice of the fried mushroom roll was out (it doesn't mention on the menu that it has terriyaki sauce).
We ordered the eggplant miso roll (very nice and fresh, the eggplant was more a soft mushy texture rather than battered and fried texture, which for some reason I was expecting), gyoza (prominent taste was chives, bit oily), kakiage (very nice and crispy), and miso soup.
I really like the fact that they have jars of pickled ginger, soy sauce, and wasabi on the table, rather than single use packets of each. There was only disposable chopsticks though😒and I had once again forgotten to bring my reusables.
One caveat for this rating, Japanese food is one of my least favourite cuisines.

Pros: no single use pickled ginger, wasabi, or soy sauce

Cons: vegan options not differentiated from vegetarian

Full vegan menu

Really great to have a Japanese restaurant with a vegan menu. The mushroom broth used in place of fish broth is fantastic.

Pros: Great food, Convenient location, Metro adjacent and near free off street parking
