Great Venue but the Food Quality is Pretty Inconsistent

The interior of Hunter Gatherer is so warm and such a feast for the eyes; every time I go I think I discover something I didn't notice the time before. The fries are double fried and always amazing but everything else is quite hit or miss. The service is usually pretty slow and a lot of the servers have that cooler than thou air and they act like refilling your water is just such an inconvenience. It's a shame as I think the owner tries really hard and really cares about his local community.

Pros: Fantastic decor, Great Fries

Cons: Poor service, Inconsistent food quality

Vegans beware!

We were excited to eat here as we drove through Regina and ordered a vegan / gluten free meal, only to have cheese served on it (and consumed). After being told they just served food to someone with lactose intolerance they would not refund money for the food. Do not trust this place if you have food sensitivities, they are not conscious nor accommodating.

Cons: Do not understand food sensitivities

I wanted to leave a better grade...

I was so looking forward to this restaurant. The food was really great! My mon vegan sisters loved it. I had a vegan poutine and as a canadian living abroad, I was very excited to find one when I was visiting in town. There is maybe only one cook as we actually waited for an hour and a half (wish I was kidding) for our food. It finally came and my vegan poutine had an egg on it. Obviously I had to wait for another, which did come quickly. But the looooong wait did leave a bad taste in my mouth. It's a funky and eclectic place...but the dead animals on the wall? I get they went for the rustic grandpa's basement vibe, but consider who you're catering to and maybe take down the dead things 😶

Pros: Lots of vegan options , Very friendly waiter , Great prices

Cons: The insaaaane wait! Prepare to wait!!, The decor being trophy animal heads (wtf)

Funky diner

Funky little vegetarian diner. They have delicious brunch and lunch/dinner foods which never disappoint. Most things on the menu can be modified from vegetarian to vegan if they aren't already vegan. They also carry the beyond meat burgers and sausages. They have great soul food and a nice community feeling. The service is a bit slow and you can't make reservations, so I wouldn't recommend going if you are in a rush. Worth it if you have the time, though!

Pros: large portion sizes, funky atmosphere, excellent food

Cons: No telephone, Can't make reservations, slow service

Filling and tasty

I got the Strange burger, made vegan. It was large and flavourful and came with vegan cheese. It was a bit messy to eat, but was well worth it. While I’ve had better vegan burgers before, I was still happy with this one. The fries are good (they are double fried fries) and were sprinkled with spice. The serving of fries was quite large—think of the serving you’d receive at a classic diner. I am usually able to eat everything on my plate, but uncharacteristically for me I wasn’t able to eat all of the fries since there were so many.

My meal cost about $16. The dinner menu is small and consists mostly of burgers, wraps and poutine (the daily specials, depending on what they are, may add a bit more variety). Nearly everything can easily be made vegan. There are also vegan desserts.

Pros: Good value (dinner options are $14 to $16), Nearly everything can be vegan

Cons: Not the most attentive service, but still decent

Try the fries

This place is very rustic but the food is pretty good. The veggie burger I had was passable (not the best I've ever had but still okay) but the fries were definitely the best part. Some of the best fries I've eaten in this city!

Great vegetarian comfort food

One of the few places in the city to have multiple options for vegetarian or vegan food. The food is comfort diner with large portions. The double fried fries are worth the trip alone. Staff is friendly and responsive.

Pros: excellent food, cosy, friendly

Awesome vegan pancakes!

I ordered the pancakes, which was one of the breakfast option which could be made vegan! They were super fluffy, soft and delicious, not to mention very nice coffee as well! The staff was super friendly and helpful and they told me that if I phone ahead, they could have most foods made vegan with vegan mayo and cheese!

Great place

Ok....now the decor is different. But it has immense character.
Food. Have been here 3 times now. It has yet to disappoint me yet. Great options on the menu, and a couple of daily specials. They can veganize everything.......just ask.
Recommended.

Great food, friendly staff

This is my favourite restaurant. I'm never disappointed when I eat here. Most of the items can be made vegan, while everything is vegetarian. The staff are well informed on dietary restrictions and extremely accommodating. I will keep coming back.

Pros: Lots of vegan options, Fair priced , Friendly staff

Cons: Inconvenient parking

Good intentions but falls short for vegans

I'm quite surprised to have found a vegetarian restaurant in Regina. The decor is a little confusing for a veg restaurant, with (fake) animal trophy mounts on the walls, but they're going for the rustic hipster look. The menu is completely vegetarian and they can also veganize some options. It's a very small restaurant, but I wouldn't expect a sprawling space for a veg diner in Regina. Some of the staff members are friendly and some don't really notice you until you pay. It's an open kitchen/bar concept, so it can probably get noisy in the dinner rush, and they also have a large communal picnic table that I imagine causes quite the cacophony when full. Otherwise, they have a handful of booths and a handful of stools at the kitchen.

Most of their daily specials are not vegan (melts, desserts, soups, etc), but some of the regular meals can be veganized by leaving out cheese, butter, or mayo. I went with cream of tomato soup, The Stranger (veganized), and pickled chickpea salad. For dessert, I got a vegan brownie. The cream of tomato soup and vegan brownie were today's specials, and when talking to the server, she informed me that The Usual, The Stranger, and the curry can be veganized. The pickled chickpea salad, fries, and house salad are the vegan-friendly sides. I had the lunch menu, which is pretty small, so the dinner menu might be more promising for vegans.

Unfortunately, this is probably my least favorite vegan dinner I've had in a while when traveling. Everything was underseasoned (and not just lacking salt) and bland, and I think they probably depend a little too heavily on the cheese and butter to give the burgers flavor. Once that is removed (and they don't have vegan cheese options), there was an odd flavor with the black bean burger, and the patty itself was quite dry. The pickled chickpea salad had some odd seasonings (or lack thereof) and again bland. The brownie was as dense as a paperweight and while it was definitely chocolately, it just didn't have a lot going for it in the texture department. However, I did clean my plate. The burger as a whole was tasty, but I would have enjoyed some vegan cheese or a slightly less dry patty. The brownie could be a bit less dense and I'd be happy. Not bad, not great, but better than I expected.

That being said, I got a rather filling vegan meal in one of the most unexpected regions I've been to so far. I just think that their vegan options need a lot of work, but I would be happy here as a vegetarian!

Pros: Reasonably priced, Unique atmosphere

Cons: Mediocre vegan options, Slightly cramped

Vegetarian and vegan comfort food

The entire menu is 100% vegetarian and vegan. No meat is cooked here. They have a regular menu and a breakfast menu. On the regular menu, they have veggie burgers ("The Stranger" and "The Usual") that can be made vegan. The beans in a blanket and chickpea salad are vegan. The Kentucky Fried Wrap can be veganized. They have some options that are for vegetarians (an onion ring cheese burger, grilled cheese, and melt of the moment). I really liked "The Stranger" burger with side chickpea salad.

For breakfast, they have pancakes that can be made vegan or gluten-free. They also have a tofu scramble that can be made vegan.

Pros: Delicious comfort food., Lovely decor in an up-and-coming neighbourhood, They are looking to get a liquor license

Cons: Menu does not label which items can be veganized, No vegan cheese option yet, Some items are expensive
