Multiple options to choose from and plus one for the Henderson’s Relish available on the tables - first time trying it for me, was a top tier vegan condiment find!

Great pie and mash! - Edit
Three vegan/veganisable options, with pie and peas (garden or mushy). The pie crusts seem homemade and they are fully filled and filling. 😋 It is like stepping back in time with the original features and old-fashioned decor. Staff are nice too and fully understand vegan. Will be returning!

just one dish on the menu it was good - Edit
Mushroom pie, mash and peas. I had Mint sauce also see the leon perins was a vegan alternative. Very few vegan options in Whitby but then the Sutcliffe gallery and shop are gone, a whitby kipper and Dracula can be found. The YMCA at the Abbey has two cakes and one special vegan that is up 196 steps. Mr Coopers looked great but was so busy I came here.

Pros: Nice atmosphere , they took care to ask about food allergies , The waitress specifically asked if I was vegan.
Cons: one item on the menu no deserts
Andrew-Lohmann
I notice that other reviewers said there was not a vegan mash option. I think the mash potato I had was vegan, it did not have the yucky flavour of dairy. It was a nice dry texture. When I asked about the dessert options, the waitress acknowledged they could do better for vegans.

Phone ahead for mash - Edit
Phone ahead if you want mash, or be prepared for a "40 minute wait" for some to be made for you. Not impressed. It does not take 40 minutes to make some mash.
Read moreWe went, thinking - as stated on their FB page - that the mash is now vegan. Not so. Seemingly they received so many complaints about the lack of butter they renaged and reintroduced the butter. Pathetic isn't it.
It's a few years since I last went to Humble Pie n Mash, and it's lost some of its olde worlde charm. Somehow now more cold, clinical and sparse.
While waiting to place our order and observing other customers, the speed of service has slowed enormously too. One of the joys of the place was that every food item was ready to serve with almost no waiting time.
It's a pity really. Vegans visiting Whitby are generally very badly catered for and Humble Pie n Mash, although offering one solitary vegan pie, (don't get your hopes up for a pudding) are selling vegans short.

I loved my first experience here, their vegan mushroom was delicious! Love the whole atmosphere of the place, is like stepping back in time. Gutted that it gets so busy though, I really wanted to go again on my next time in Whitby but it was full!

Ran out of mash 🤔 - Edit
The last thing I want to do is to make any unfounded accusations so I’ll simply say that at around 7.05pm, after being told that our first choice pies weren’t available, and our second choice would take 20 minutes to cook, (they close at 7.30pm) we were then told they had run out of mash. Couple next to us who had ordered meat pies (after us) were not told about this mash situation. Didn’t want just a pie for our main meal of the day so we went to Moutrays instead which was excellent (for us vegetarians at least).
Read moreSuggestions…have at least one vegan pie choice “ready to go”, and/or have a 7pm cut off for food orders of any kind.
Or maybe they really did just run out of mash…? 🤔

Two vegan pie options and the mash in now made to a vegan recipe. The food is amazing and so is this little pie shop.

Great traditional shop - Edit
The shop is really nice with a 1940s theme to it. Although small, we were still able to get a wheelchair in. The pies were gorgeous, complemented with mush peas and gravy. They are missing a trick with not making vegan mash and I did mention this. They did say if they were contacted in the morning, they would prepare portions of vegan mash for you. I don't know why they don't just make up a small batch. Other than the mash every one still loves the place

Yummy savory pies - Edit
Had lunch with my family at Humble Pie and Mash. There were 2 vegan pies, but no vegan mash was available (though is a simple thing to veganize). The restaurant did offer extra peas and a discount. The pies were amazing and we would gladly return.

No vegan mash - Edit
This is such a cozy little restaurant that’s perfect for a hearty meal. There are two vegan pie options and you can get mushy or garden peas. The only downside when we went is that there was no vegan mash or non-dairy milk so we were given extra peas and charged less. All in all, a lovely pie and peas but I would love to see the restaurant use vegan butter as default (let’s be real, no one would know!) so there’s always an option for vegans.

After reading the other reviews here I’m not sure they ever do vegan mashed potatoes! We were told he made it with dairy butter on the day we visited but not so sure it’s ever made vegan.

No mash! Bah! - Edit
Looking forward to going here as not been since becoming vegan (only as a vegetarian). I assumed that with them having vegan pies now there would be vegan mash. I had to ask if the mash was vegan, was told no and asked if that was still alright ! I ended up with pie, peas and gravy for the full price of £11.99. Although it was OK, I was quite disappointed. We were told we could ring the day before to request vegan mash but not sure I'd go again anyway, which is a real shame.

Looking forward to pie and mash. Were told no vegan mash (just don’t get it)

Pie but NO mash ? - Edit
The wild mushroom and ale pie was very tasty. A cosy place to eat ,steeped in history and excellent service. Unfortunately, they don't have vegan mash to go with your vegan pie, which I find bizarre,as it's easier to make vegan mash than it is to make the pie ? They served our pies with mushy peas and vegan gravy. Again they had vegan gravy but can't make the mash. You can't have pie without mash. Now we were kept waiting for half an hour, the young lad serving us was absolutely lovely and apologized a few times for our wait. As a result we didn't pay full price. I have noticed on a Google review that a previous diner was charged the full £11.99 for their meal, which is pretty appalling if they can't provide the whole pie and mash experience.

Nice pies and surroundings, no mash - Edit
This place is cute. It's like eating in a museum. It's quite small, so there is sometimes a queue for tables, but we got in straight away.
Read moreUnfortunately, the mash isn't vegan. As others have mentioned, this is quite annoying because pies aren't sold separately, only as a pie, mash, and peas meal and no alternative or price reduction is offered. Some reviews say they will make vegan mash from scratch, but we weren't offered this despite ordering four vegan meals. Maybe it depends how busy they are, or maybe you really really have to ask them to. I'm a bit surprised they don't even offer something like instant mash as a backup as it'd be better than nothing.
We were warned that because vegan pies are only cooked to order, they would take a little longer. I think we were told 20 mins, but it was rather a lot longer. Leave plenty of time if you're going here, especially if you have plans afterwards - it's not a "fast food" option even though you might initially expect it to be.
The pies were yummy, though. At the time of writing there are two veggie and two vegan pies.
Pros: Yummy pies, Clearly marked vegan pies, Quaint surroundings
Cons: Quite slow, No vegan mash

Ok vegan options - Edit
I had the mushroom pie and my husband had the chickpea pie. We were informed that the mash wasn't vegan and though the menu states that they can make vegan mash with a wait of thirty minutes we weren't advised that this was the case and didn't feel like they would have welcomed us asking. After we ordered they turned the sign on the door to closed so that explained it! Neither of us missed the mash though and we were stuffed afterwards.

Delicious vegan pie, but mash wasn’t vegan as it contained milk and butter. They said that they thought the bisto gravy was vegan, but didn’t seem 100% sure so I just stuck to pie and peas. The pie was lovely though, I really enjoyed it.
