A great veggie find in central Kunming

I loved the food here - was very happy with finding it as there didn’t seem to be many vegan places in Kunming. The waitress was lovely and helped me and my partner order (as we spoke only English). We had the traditional Yunnan soup (so good we came back twice for it) and I still crave it now. We visited in July 2024

Excellent vegan restaurant

I absolutely love this place!

I went there alone during lunchtime and ordered 4 dishes and one hemp drink, all for ¥102 where to lion's mane mushroom dish was almost half of the price. One dish was a combined soup and dumpling dish that wasn't on the menu, but the owner really wanted me to try their soup so she added the soup to my dumpling dish without extra charge. The food was really good, but it was also too much food and could've easily been for two people with one more dish.

Everything is handmade, their yeast dough is using laomian (sourdough), their red plum vinegar they ferment themselves, and the latest on their menu is their rice noodle threads which took them years to develop according to the owner. Soups are boiled for hours and are thickened with nuts and seeds, and no artificial flavors (including MSG) are used. Much of the umami comes from mushrooms or kelp. You can really feel the passion the owner has for plant based food!

The restaurant has been open for 12 years, and the owner has long been very conscious about not harming nature and animals, as well as eating healthy. It's not really the western animal rights based philosophy of veganism, but a bit more of a spiritual approach to living life and seeking harmony with nature that I've encountered in China a couple of times. Similar, but separate from buddhist philosophy. She had some daoist statues and paintings, so it could be related to that but I have little to no knowledge of that to know.

The atmosphere was really calm on a weekday lunchtime, and I sat there for 30 min more after finishing the food to digest a bit after overeating, and to enjoy their excellent bamboo leaf tea and green tea of which you can have as much as you want.

Needless to say, this restaurant gets my highest recommendations, in every regard.

Edit: make sure to use an external map app to find the restaurant. The address is correct here, but the map pin location is a couple of hundred meters off.
